Not one to follow convention ,this project is going to be done a little differently. Starting with a pre crashed vehicle does have its merits, but that part is awhile away. So,first project, let's get the wiring sorted. Bearing in mind, this was parked up after it died in its Motherland and had to be returned to British soil in a box,it will either need a resurrection party or a funeral service... First up,remove the airbox Three hours later it should look like this Then it was a question of untangling the wiring harness as to remove the frame I see someone has had the cover off the Hall effect sensors. These tell Hans in the engine room when to light the fire. No Sprechen ze Blitz = motoren kaput. Then it was off with the frame. German engineering at its best where you don't need it on a bike. Please explain the logic behind this... Five of the six frame bolts have good access all round. Let's put threads in the casing for the bolts ,Ja? Sixth bolt is very restricted with bad access. That means we need to put an even harder to get to nyloc nut at the back Ja? Anyway after completing the four spring Duck technique, the bolt finally yielded and the frame came off....

So if i've read it right it will be a pickup based on a piaggio ape chassis wrapped in home-made panels powered by a bmw bike engine?
Obviously in it for the windy path to the end goal updates...

Plan is Bmw powered Piaggio Ape,but hopefully done that the engine isn't immediately obvious. Motor chosen for its size,or rather, its height. I think I can hide it in there.....😂😂

You just don't know how much I'm looking forward to this one.
Engineering genius crossed with ape! 😊
Could be a soaraway Sun headline.

Raided my drawer of," it may come in handy one day,so won't throw it away just yet" After a bit of soldering and heatshrink,I now have a good battery connection that can be disconnected quickly if the magic smoke wants to leave the harness for any reason. Battery on a piece of wood,as batteries don't seem to like concrete floors. Started out at the ignition switch ,as that seemed a good place to start. Won't go into the details, but removed the electrical part of the switch from the barrel and key.Ignition now in the on position Now need to find some switches. Would imagine there must be a switch of the clutch that you can't start it if the clutch isn't pulled in. Would also imagine there will be an interlock switch to only allow you to start in neutral if the clutch isn't pulled in. Not sure if this bike had it,but some bikes also have an interlock switch on the stand, that you also can't start it if the stand is down. Think they might only be fitted to a side stand, something, again, that I am not sure this bike had. Oh,the joys of incomplete motorbikes 😂

Interesting merge! I have an old BMW boxer and this cannot be started if the engine is not in neutral unless you pull the clutch in. If it is in neutral, you don't need to pull the clutch. i assume this is identical on this BMW

A quick poke around with the meter had interesting results. Like a dog chasing his tail,A bit like, now you see it ,now you don't. Power would be where you would expect it one minute, but come back five minutes later and it wasn't. So,decided to remove the harness and work at a sensible height It soon became apparent, that any connector or relay that was blue in colour ,was ABS related. Not a problem to remove that lot,as it was redundant. There is a lot of redundant stuff. Never heard of an Ape with bulb monitoring....😂 The fuel injection basically has its own harness, that's very easy to remove. The electronic ignition is part of the main loom. Took everything out the main relay / fuse box to get a better idea how everything is integrated. Turns out there are numerous, small ,multipin connectors in the harness, most of which are showing various degrees of corrosion. That will be the cause of the intermittent power scenario previously mentioned. Funnily enough, all the connectors related to the EFI and ignition seem to be better quality, seal better, and show no signs of corrosion .Decided to strip out what I actually would need to get the engine to run. Done sympathetically,so can reintegrate it into the harness if needs be,but I doubt it. A couple of hours getting that luurvely sticky fabric tape of the harness leaves me with all I need to get the engine to run Only need to get the temperature control unit out the main harness now. Hopefully the ECU turns up today, and I can carry on testing...

Found an ecu to replace the one that was but wasn't ,but you never asked so I never told you but I never checked.....🙄 Then raided the famous drawer again Needed some cheap, non sticky insulation tape of the variety normally found at bootfairs. Saw these.... Two lights and three rolls of tape for £4 wasn't going to break the bank. They even work 😂😂😂 Spent the afternoon cobbling a crude harness together. Ignition switch, kill switch and starter switch wired in. Ignition on,starter switch pressed and.......

.... no magic smoke appeared Starter spins over nicely. Bit of water pumped out the exhaust. Don't think it's ominous as the coolant is full of antifreeze and this water isn't. Only came out of one pipe,so might be from storage. Haven't got a fuel pump for it yet,one on its way. So thought of checking for Spark. Seemed like a lot of work to pull the plugs,so squirted a bit of cleaner into the manifold and turned the engine over again. Made throaty ,running noises, so at least I know I have Spark 😂😂😂 So all in all, a good step forward. At least half my improvised wiring works 😊Should get the pump, filter and fuel hose in the week,so hopefully engine running next weekend 😊

This should be good lol. Having never seen or heard a piaggio ape until this thread imagine my surprise to be overtaken by three on a trailer coming off the m4 at Swindon. If anything like your previous threads will be most entertainment

@johnnybravo you're the type of mechanical madman I can only aspire to emulate!!! You simply cannot conceive of how aligned this project is with my type of thinking. I've always loved the idea of an Ape and with BMW being my favourite motorcycle brand, what you are concocting here is a thing of beauty. I'm along for the ride. Having grown up in South Africa where 3 wheelers were few and far between (mainly VW based trikes), I always yearned for the rare. My father was a VW specialist mechanic, which means he tended to work on those trikes, being the favoured garage/engine supplier to the local trike builder. On arriving in the UK I was googling about BMW R100RT spares (I'd left a crashed one back in the homeland), when I discovered a blog about a guy fitting the RT boxer motor into a Pembleton (Citroen 2CV based kit car). This led me to my very first 3-wheeler in the form of a Lomax 223 (also 2CV based). I never did fit a BMW motor to that though. My current three wheeler is my Messerschmitt KR200 replica with Honda scooter engine in it. I have great plans to build another, but to up the power a little . But too many projects and too little free time means instead I'll satisfy these urges by reading along with all your followers!!!

^^ Thank you sir. Your K200 is uber cool. I made some parts for an original one couple of years ago. Got to drive it,but it was a pile of poo. Poor little rich boy who had more White stuff lining his nostrils than skin. Had it converted into a mobile ice bucket to serve oysters at his wedding....Go figure😂

Sunday. No idea where the week has gone, but there has been a steady stream of bits and bobs. Found a fuelpump from a Golf Gti for a Tenner,Fuel filter for a fiver. They arrived, but the non return valve and banjo fitting for the pump was missing. Quick trip to Carbuilder solutions sorted that out on Friday Having not seen the original fuel pump,I figured it better to run an additional relay,as I am sure this pump most likely draws more current than the original. Dug out the old ABS relay and repurposed it Fuel pump and filter temporarily fitted Off to get some go go juice......

All connected up Time to play with the hitech fun panel Ignition on. Tap the starter button and the fuel pump runs for two seconds before switching off. All good so far,as the fuel pump won't continue to run until it gets an impulse from the Hall effect sensor, that confirms the engine is running. Did this a couple of times to build up the fuel pressure, then..... DISASTER. Fuel all over the place 😡 Seals on the injectors between them and the fuel rail leaking. Fuel rail removed, o rings cleaned Injectors seat directly into the head. All cleaned and ready to be replaced Hit the starter and.......

I need to know now!! Loving the idea of this build, when are you expecting the Italian Ape to arrive? I am not sure you REALLLLLY Know our JohnnyBravo mate. There is no Italian Ape arriving. Prepare yourself to be amazed. A couple of oil drums, a heavy duty pipe bender (Anyone local have one JB can use for a bit??) some old angle iron from a discarded road sign or two..... some candy floss and few drops of Unicorn P!$$ to sweeten it all and a bit of stainless steel tubing for the exhaust and Hey Presto....... Or something like that. Using this pile of mangled scrap.

I sincerely hope you're going to keep the insane BMW indicators that need three thumbs to operate. I always loved them, proof that ze Germans' sense of humour has consistently been underrated
