So, roughly 70mm Forward of the steering axis. A good place to start. The actual fork stachions are offset roughly 30mm ahead of the steering axis on these forks. So I need to find roughly another 40mm. Which, isn't that difficult to do. These forks have the axle running through the centreline of the fork These forks have the axle in front of the centreline So,either I find another set of forks,or I modify the ones I have ...

I was aware of the brake mount issue but thought it insignificant given your expertise! I didn’t however realise that these things run wheelbarrow sized wheels so thought that you could use a twin disc wheel from a bike... Are you going to alter the final drive ratio and add a LSD? 😂😂. You seem to have an uncanny knack of mentioning what's coming up next. Having had a quick eyeball yesterday,it seems I won't generate enough caster trail with the forks the way they are. Not very scientific, but, seeing the original one legged fork is bent to the side, the best approximation of where the axle sits in relation to the steering axis, was eyeballed with a bit of round bar. I think you could also be limited on the spring rate available as well in the little moped forks - That coilover would give far better choice of springs - then again it all depends on what the final use is. My preference would also have been for something that had the fork stanchions held in double rather than single clamps. For Brakes - just buy another wheel and take the Nissan Deltawing approach

Funnily enough,i was looking at the triple tree set up on the bmw frame yesterday 😂. Like I said previously, upside down forks are not ruled out just yet....

What about the front suspension from a reliant robin or a bond bug?

Moving along. To the back. The final drive. The Ape uses 10" rear wheels. Two of them, opposed to the one 17 or18" tyre the K100lt uses. Herein lies a challenge,in that the apes tyres are roughly 45% smaller. That means I should be able to pull off in fifth gear. Not ideal. The bike had final drive ratios of around 2.8:1. First gear roughly 4.5:1 and second gear 3:1. So I need a diff with considerably less than 2.8:1.. Lowest I had found up to now was a Bmw Diesel with 2.35:1. Still too low and a heavy lump to boot 🙁 So I got one of these No use for the Haldex unit, but that is only a bunch of clutch plates and a hydraulic pump and controller Time to strip her Drain and filler plug loose Not much oil coming out Didn't bode well, but turns out diff drained whilst still in the car, hence the loose plugs 😊

Let's see her with her clothes off Showing a bit of crack And a bit of flange Geary goodness Has potential

Stripped the clutches out The bit I am interested in Unfortunately CROWNwheel and pinion sit on the wrong side. This is what I had hoped for Open diff, but with options Has potential due to its 1.6:1 ratio. More bits due to turn up soon,so the four spring Duck technique might still happen...

Yeah, I was looking at one for a project, but decided against it because of the haldex curse word on it

Haldex very easy to remove 😊 @johnnybravo, remember we others are but mere mortals It is true, the Haldex IS easy to remove. It's what goes on instead to drive the bloomin thing that's the fun part Also @johnnybravo, the Focus RS mk3 doesn't have a normal diff in the back there. It runs another electronically controlled clutch type LSD

Off to go fetch, what hopefully will be more suited,a diff with the same ratios, but with the CROWNwheel and pinion the opposite way round to the Audi TT unit I opened up. This turned up earlier this week It's part of this A five speed gear box, sequential, made by Bmw,and has a reverse 😊 This arrived today Only problem is the bellhousing on the engine is wrong 😔 This is what I have This is what I need One on the way from the continent....

Still keeping tabs on progress, not much for me to comment on so far but I’m interested in the tyre setup as it might come in handy for the Acty front - I’m trying to find a 10” tyre with an overall diameter of around 18” to give me extra clearance.
Is the original front wheel a 10” ? Is so what are the specs on the tyre? (Overall diameter / load rating / radial?) also same question for rear tyres please.
Cheers Phil

Original tyres are 10" Michelin make them,S83 100/90-10 or 3.50-10 S83 59J. It's a reinforced tyre specified for the Ape. They also make a 12" version for one of the bigger Piaggio three wheelers, and that will be the tyre I will use on the front. Plan for the back is to use two 195/55 R10 trailer tyres. They are a radial tyre ,8ply, so seeing normal toilet paper is only two ply ,and does a satisfactory job of circling Uranus ,looking for Klingons,I am sure 8 ply will stand up to having the shyte ragged out of them.....

Cheers for that, think those rear tyres will do the job for what I need - I’ve been looking at 3.50-10 tyres but so far they’ve all had curved profiles so more suited to a single setup than a pair which got me thinking about trikes and three wheelers.

Took a drive up to Stonleigh yesterday. Had a bit of a result. Went to go and fetch this Which is a later model VAG diff, same ratio as the first one ,just a bit more compact. The result was, that the guy I thought I bought it off is a bit of a petrolhead. He is building a MK2 Golf into a 4wd monster. He bought the diff thinking it was the one he needed, but when the sub frame arrived,it soon became evident what he had,and what he needed ,were two different things. He needed the earlier diff....just like the one I don't need 😂😂😂. No money changed hands,I just need to put my first one back together today, and it was a straight swop 😎 Had a look at the S3 diff and,it's all good. CROWNwheel and pinion the right way. A lot more compact than the first, but pretty porky,so will be attending a weight watchers session soon. Just need to formulate a plan to get the two talking to each other Then it was raid the stainless stash Fire up the Weber Chestnut time....
