Ok, you're right! Sorry for the delays in posting-- the Studebaker/Hemi build is waiting until the MR2 engine swap is done. Should be another week or so, but with Christmas and travel, stupid old plumbing job getting in the way- I've been insanely busy. I have the MR2 and the new engine, everything is out and set up for the 3GSTE swap. I have to order a new clutch and a plug and play harness, so I can save some time there. Once that is running, it's gone and the Studebaker comes IN for CHOP & PLOP Also- yes, dealing with the city building department for a new shop behind the other house is proving to be a big fat JOY (and I'm being sarcastic there). Too close to the property line. OK- I'll move it over, re-submit plans. Oh, now it's too tall, you have to re-submit. Oh, now we're a bunch of power hungry office personnel and you'll do what we say.. Yes, yes I will. Meanwhile, I'm glad the garage I have now, is mine until sometime in Feb. After that, the new building had better be constructed or I'll be finishing the Studebaker under a tarp! So yeah, next week should be at least a new video update, if even only about the MR2 swap & new building stuff. More as it happens... Stay tuned

Ok- Build update. Have not touched the Studebaker truck yet. OR the 68 Ford. Well, we moved the Ford over to the old garage. The current garage has the MR2 engine swap in it. The sub zero temperatures, Christmas & New Years and my regular job has got me waiting on parts for the MR2. Those that might know me, already know I've been trying to build a bigger shed/garage connected to the house. That way, I can have a BIG garage at home- rather than go from one place to the other all the time. The city planning commission didn't like the building I was proposing (even though they told me I could build it that size over the phone). Many hours spent with the builder, the architect dept. and several other time wasting conversations. We have filed for a variance in the rules to allow it's construction. It's nothing special mind you, 24x32 garage type structure behind the existing garage. Long story short- I'm doing all I can to have a cool little shop for my hobbies. Meanwhile- While at work the other day, the boss tells me of this space that just became available. Four bays. A Lift. All new everything, air lines, heat & AC, Power lines, bathroom etc. It's right around the corner from my regular job, at the plumbing shop. It's secured, fenced in, has cameras & lights, plenty of outdoor parking. We were at the building today, for a service call on an unrelated area. I spoke to the owner about a short term, low cost lease option on the space. He's a car guy. A petrol head. Loves the stuff we're building. We took a closer look at the space and it's amazing. Scary. But amazing. I'm not sure it'll happen. I'm not sure of anything at this point except that I'm going to be building stuff regardless of WHERE it is. I need a backup plan if the new garage can't be built. This just might be it.

I hear you about the scary side of making this kind of commitment to what is currently "only a hobby" but damn look at that space !! Secure, heat, light and power, a lift ?? If the lease is flexible and the rent is cheap enough you gotta do it !!
Phil.

i decided long ago never to walk in anyones... hangon, no, i meant i decided long ago that earning a living out of a hobby would probably make me hate it. which is why i now work in reflective seismology and carry on pottering around with cars !
as awesome as that 4 bay place is, would take some serious step up in turn-over to fund itself? staff, multiple projects ? dunno.

Which is exactly why I work form home - I could do with something at least 4 bay and I would end up losing one of them to house a spray booth / oven - however it would mean employing others in order to chase / meet the overheads concerned with something this size - so I make the best of what I have - keep it organised - improve it where I can and keep myself to myself - in a country where land & property is cost prohibitive it's better that I keep my feet on the ground rather than dream about the ideal workshop - but it sure would be a luxury to have a place like in the posted images.

It's easy to think so - but simply not that easy - There is a fantastic 1,000 sq ft unit up the road from me - its on a secure commercial estate, office, WC, mess room, mezzanine storage, parking, heated unit etc - it's £10k a year lease but add business rates, power, heating, lighting, refuse collection, insurance at commercial rates and it becomes £25k per annum - add in everything else that goes with it and before you know it you have find to £2.5 / £3k a month just to stand still and that's before you think about paying yourself or anyone else a wage!

I know. It makes sense completely. All of these things everyone mentions, are valid points.
Stepping up production, to meet the building costs, it's not as far off as one might think. I have been talking with two other buddies, one I've known 35 years, the other 20yrs. They might want to share it with me, just to store their cars when not in use. I can pull them in and out at will. One has 2 cars and the other one wants to build with me, he's in some of the videos on the channel- My German buddy Dieter. He would use a couple parking spaces outside.
I'm covering all the bases with cost estimation and as it sits, the garage I work out of now, costs about the same as what this would be. I have until Feb 21st to hear what the city has to say about building a new shed. Meanwhile, I don't want to lose out on what could be the most awesome space I've ever considered.
I'm off to work now, we'll see how this develops over the next couple days. It's crazy to think my logo could be on the door of that place.

Building the home shop won’t be free either. Building the home shop will tie up a lot of capital that could be used to kickstart the business.) with And the home shop also won’t get your money back when you sell.
So, IF the goal is to figure out a transition to doing the car thing full time, renting the shop might be the more cost effective path to answering the question. Do the business plan and if you can’t do a business plan then don’t do a business since your odds of success at that point are no better than putting the bundle on red or black and spinning the wheel.

Subscribed as always. I saw this in Austin Texas in 2015. Patina look on the outside, but all modern brutal business on the underside. Seems the owner has some other toys too. That's a hood ornament. Notice also the flying pig hanging from the rear view mirror. I hope that helps. This was on the new series of iron resurrection.

This space would have it's monthly rent, then an electric bill and a gas bill. We only use gas for 4 months out of the year and the power is almost 100% turned off when nobody is there. The property already has security on it. I do all my internet stuff from my desk at home. If I really need to look something up, I can use my phone, so no internet bill. The insurance that I have on my garage now, would carry over to the personal property on the new one. The building itself, is covered by the owner. Outside of that- the cost really isn't like opening a retail business. It's more of a toy box for a few months, to see if it warrants a real effort to make it a serious business. It's all about passion. If passion isn't profitable, I would scale back and work in a shed. If it starts to make money, and I see no reason why it wouldn't- then it can be an incorporated small business. My buddies and I are getting together to talk about it next week, we'll see how it goes. I'll take a picture of the Studebaker truck so we can sort of stay on topic. haha

It was fairly warm for this time of year- then it started raining. And the temperature dropped. Everything froze. Then it snowed two and a half feet. All in the span of about 36 hours. 15 degrees F. (that's -9.4 for you Celsius crowd) I shoveled the snow in both driveways and went to see the Studebaker. It's in hibernation, for sure. Winter slows everything down. I'm going to put the coffee on and edit videos today. Here are a few pictures of the 1950 Studebaker Truck:

You are far more motivated than me anyway, but I find that driving over to my unit forces me to work on my cars. If they're sat at home, so am I!

If it makes you feel any better, even finding the motivation to head to the shed I've got (unit is too grand a description) is proving hard at the moment.
It's directly on my route too and from work, but I've managed next to nothing in the past 5 weeks or more.

I wish the cars were home with me, I'd be cleaning parts, organizing things, cleaning the shop, painting parts- Whatever I can do whilst waiting on the good bits. Being bored, makes me love my job and that's crazy because I always say how much I don't like plumbing. Fact is, working on something is better than doing nothing!
What do normal people do with their time? Watch sports I guess?

I could be cleaning stuff over there, and I might do it this weekend- it's been ARCTIC CIRCLE COLD these past 2 weeks. Single digits in Fahrenheit, you know -15 in Celsius...
The heater in the garage is barely adequate. It needs to be on for 2 hours before doing anything in there. Plus, if I clean parts in something that is flammable, then BOOM. So I have to heat it up, turn off the heaters and clean parts until I'm frozen. THEN I can turn them on and reheat the place.
Jeez, the more I talk about it, the more a proper shop sounds better and better!
