Text from the seller: It's 1988 jet black special edition (only 1000 made and not many left). 998cc. Spots of standard mini rust such as rain catcher and around headlight but nothing serious. Last had it running about 16 months ago and has been stored in a garage since then. It's got a few engine upgrades such as long branch manifold, better air filter and straight through centre exit exhaust. I assume you've seen the exterior pics. She's a stunner. I've got a load of bits to come with it too if wanted such as brake discs and pads, new locks and handles etc. It'd take something like £1750 to buy it My brother text me to see what i thought of it. i can't get to see it until Sunday so have time to think about it It looks like the shiny wheels aren't on all four corners I think my brother's idea is to sell it on for a profit but it's so hard to judge values on these It's going to need work. My brother thinks maybe a grand with minimal rust What do you think going on the above info?

Out of MOT for 9 years. Special editions in any marque are two-a-penny. Jet Black - 68 left on the road, 234 of the 1,000 on SORN so nowhere near extinct. Asking price not horrendous but not generous either. In nice condition, running well with legit MOT might be worth about £4K? I'm not writing it off but I'd want to give this a really careful and detailed check over to gauge the true cost of getting it decent, why was it pulled off the road? I'd be trying to get the price down further.

Good work on the MOT. I had misread 'Last had it running about 16 months ago' as 'was on the road 16 months ago'
On the up side it may mean it has been less exposed to weather in those years
But you're right. There is a reason it came off the road
I've found the seller's Twitter account and he appears to be around 32 and i think it may have been a young man's ambition that never got back on the road
If the body is very good we can theoretically live with a number of other issues

Ask if you can hear it running and suggest you could help to get it started if needed. If mechanics seem OK, you might be lucky and a couple of weekends work and a few hundred quid might see it prepped for MOT and serviced. If you go to view, look for flaws / MOT fails and use these to leverage the price down if you can.

tough one this, id usualy put all these type of mini limited editions in the same box (advantage, piccadily, Ritz, Neon etc etc etc) so you could say there are thousands of these about, but the red hot and jet black were like the pre RSP cooper, so id assume they are the more desirable of the limited editions, so if its a couple of weekends work away from an MOT it might be worth getting the price down a bit, i think your brother is about right to assume you'll end up chucking £1k at it. I think unless to get it for a bargain price there wont be much money to be made on it, so be prepared to chuck money at it and have fun with it, even if you end up breaking even. I don't think there will be much money to be made by just buying to split it up and sell it on.

i spoke to the seller today. He's an alright chap and has owned it for 14 years since he was 18. He got it completely standard from the original owner and has added wheels, arches, grill and steering wheel. Along with LCB / exhaust and air filter. IT's good he knows what has been touched through the years
My brother has pulled out realising it is a project but i am still considering it
If it could get away with no paint work or an engine rebuild i think i would risk a grand on it. IF the rear subframe is good the brakelines are the only thing that comes to mind as something i haven't done / can't do. Balljoints, wheel bearings, radius arm bushes shouldn't be a problem
I've arranged to see it on Sunday. If i get some pics i may put them up here for fun

If i get some pics i may put them up here for fun If you can do ball-joints & wheel bearings you should have have little trouble with draining the hydraulics, replacing brake lines and filling / bleeding brakes, (which might not be required anyway). I doubt the engine will be knacked but it doesn't hurt to get some idea so you can work on getting price adjusted if needed. The ideal, after hearing the car run, would be to get a compression tester on it. If you can get it bought, running & MOT'd for £2K and it looks reasonably good as well I don't think that would be a bad buy! Don't forget to factor in the cost of getting the car trailered back to your place. We're in the approach to Xmas so this lad probably needs some cash and you might be able to use that to your advantage. Good luck for an early Xmas pressie to yourself, I love Mini's but can't fit in the driving seat !

I could be interested in this if you choose it's not for you mate, so I'd be interested in hearing what you decide. Cheers

Well I bought the Mini
It's a lot rustier than I had hoped but I got it for an ok price, I think
I haven't seen areas that definitely need welding but there is significant rust around the door steps and sills so quite likely
I don't know what I want to do with it yet. I haven't started it yet but unless a core plug has popped or something I think it will be fine
If I do something interesting or decide to sell it on I'll put it here ☺
Thanks

Hopefully not substantially worse than you've described & will make for a straightforward return to the road. Looking at those pics I'm just thinking, might not look bad de-chromed in matte black, (or would look badass!) p.s With the width of those tyres I bet the cornering is awesome.

What does it need? Would you sell complete?

Are you breaking it purely for financial reasons or is it a pile mate?
I'd be interested in buying it whole depending on it's state.

It depends on your point of view really
IT will need some welding and seeing as i can't, any amount of that is quite expensive
I'm near Scunthorpe, if you're reasonably nearby you're welcome to come and have a look

I'm in Nottingham so not too far, would definitely be willing to travel to do a deal though.
Will it need a re-spray? Is the welding structural? How solid are the chassis and subframe, anything else that needs doing?
What ball park figure would you be looking at?
Cheers
