CVH, type 3, type E or type 9 gearbox, sierra 7” diff. Front suspension and rack is based on chevette (but not), rear trailing arms are Reliant. Can be found with galv chassis but non-galv will be more abundant and probably cheaper (and really quite simple to repair any rot). I think I'll keep a look out for one. I don't need anything until 18 months time but will need some time to iron out any issues Give me a shout if you’re ever in Gloucester area - I have a barn full of Scimitar projects

Chipping in with another vote for Scimitar SS1 1300 or 1400.
I've had an SS1 1300 since before passing my test and have run it for the last two years with the owners club doing sprint & hillclimb. Hacks about at the occasional auto-solo and auto-test also.
There's not much love out there for the N/A CVH, but it's still a very worthwhile engine and cheap to meddle with, plenty of cross compatibility in the Ford range and an abundance of CVH tuning parts knocking about. Aiming to put out 100bhp from my 1300 in it's next incarnation and I know of a 1400 in the club at 104bhp.
In the mean time here's mine wagging about with all of 83bhp..
You won't find many off the shelf RWD's under 1.4L that are as capable. That said, finding an SS1 can take a while, but something is always along eventually.
There's a galv-chassis SS1 1300 project sat on my ex-neighbour's driveway if you're tempted...

It would probably make more sense to go for a galv chassis regardless of what engine it came with, and if so can you fit a cage too? I don't want too much of a project as I've got lots of those already.

That's stripped to the bones! Do they fit with a hard top? Come to think of it, do most of them come with a hard top or are they quite rare?

Now looks like this Hard tops were an option and unless you want matching paint or excellent condition, they’re fairly readily available.

Being an MX5 owner I'm probably biased. But I think I'd stick with an MX5 and finding a suitable 1.3/1.4 engine. Simply, on the basis that MX5 are plentiful, cheap and there's a great supply of parts both new and used plus there's a wealth of tuning knowledge out there. Suspension choices, LSD's, 6 Speed boxes, Roll bars etc, etc - the list is endless.

If I can find one on the button for tidy money that I won't have to do all the work to get the engine in and running
