I want to replace the pop-up lights on my TR7 to save some weight - it's a hillclimb competition car and every kilo counts. The lights, mounts, motors, wiring etc are pretty substantial and I'd estimate at a good total of 15kg. I'd like to keep it road legal and save the hassle of a 'day-time MOT' so I'm thinking of what units I could use. I want to replace the pop-up unit with a piece of transparent poly-carbonate or acrylic and then mount a light underneath, a bit like this MX5: So, here's the question; I need a light unit that has main and dipped beam, rectangular in shape to maximise the narrow aperture and has the fixing on the back. (This is so it can be mounted on the vertical surface behind the existing pods.) Any suggestions? (Basically I need a Caterham 7 type unit, but not round and mounts from the back, not the underside)

No such thing as a 'daytime' MOT its just a regular MOT with an advisory of 'headlights not fitted'. And you can remove them before the MOT is due as long as the switches and wiring is also removed it will reamin road legal (as long as your insurer agrees with it. Weirdly I was talking to a Traffic cop friend about this today as a few weeks ago the subject popped up on a FB page and a so called friend who is a tester along with one other got abusive and ended up blocking me because he didn't like me pointing out the very clearly written MOT manual so I Emailed DVSA and they agree cars do not need headlights they also added that if you don't have lights you also legally do no need brake lights, which I'm sure your insurer won't like.
The issue with fitting acrylic facias is that it may distort the beam pattern if not used with the correct lenses (tried and tested, I gave up)
OR how about doing away with the pop up motor ect but I can't see the motor and plate weighing 15kg.

The original set up is a massive construction with 2 heavy bases linked by 4 steel bars, even the lamp pod is cast and the motors are basically 2 wiper mofors.
You could make a lighter fiberglass pod with a single pivot which does not pop up so far (could be a manualy operated system) and uses a couple of modern projector lamps.

Thanks for the responses guys, the best solution I've got so far is a pair of these mounted on the vertical surface behind the existing pod: I could always make the acrylic cover removable to stop beam distortion for road/MOT use.

The Scimitar SS1, SST & Sabre uses TR7 motor(s) and there’s a couple of tried and tested mods.
On my RG sprint car, I’ve removed the motors and made a simple strut to hold the lights up with wing nut to bring 9.7kgs (both lights, motors and frames) down to 3.2 (lights and alloy frame). Although you could technically have a daytime MOT (as it’s still well known as), RG regs do say that everything should still work.
I’ve seen a poor attempt to fit fiat coupe lights but one that uses simple twin LED and another that used 200sx s13 aftermarket fixed lights fitted were the best results aesthetically.
