Hehehe, interesting thread. When I was a tiny kid my grandad had made a go cart out of big pram wheels on a shaped board. Very basic. Steering via a central pivot with rope or feet on the axle. Nothing to it. All the bigger kids had built themselves go-carts too and we had daily races in the summer holidays on a steep hill in the local park. Thing is, this cart my grandad had made went like absolute stink. Nobody could come near it. Total speed machine. Recently I've been telling my youngest daughter about that and we decided we're going to build one this summer. So I came here with great interest but now realise the world has moved on significantly and you are actually putting more engineering into a soap box racer than I could ever hope to apply to my car hahaha. So I don't think we'll be entering any soapbox derbies with our little go-plank. It's clearly a very different game these days! (Bookmarked) do it anyway the winner of last years event was basically a canoe on a plank with pram wheels, we all though it would snap at the first jump, but they stormed it pivot steering isn't allowed for this comp though and one axle needs to have 'proper' brakes.

Wellllp, that's us out of professional competition then I could probably rig up some brake calipers, but I'd seriously struggle to come up with a proper steering system. We'll just go outlaw and hit the hills on our own I guess. = )

Pics from last weekend, not done anything yet this weekend, but I'm hoping to start on the floor tomorrow if I get time. Planning on where the calipers are going to go They are 'chinese moped' calipers, so aren't sided But with the banjo fitings I got off ebay, the pipework should be OK Finished the rest of the frame mounting brackets for the left hand caliper Some sturdy bracketry to hold it in place different view view of the disk. Eagle eyed readers may notice that the caliper is only 'half on' the disk, this is because I found that all the tiny mis alignments in all of the parts put together meant that if I mounted it as normal, it would bind during wheel rotation, but if I only had half the caliper on, it doesn't. Brake performance is presumably reduced, but it's good enough as far as I can tell for now - a road trial will show if i'm right or not paint makes it better putting the 'end' on in situ, as i'm routing the pipes through the chassis Flats ground on the axle to seat the bolts for the carrier Other side being planned Overview It actually works Bleeding the brakes All being well, I'll be getting some plywood tomorrow for the floor, then I need a seat, then it's potentially test drive time

Some pics from the bank holiday and this weekend just gone. Most of the engineering is done now, I still have the electrics to do, but this week I've been putting the bodywork together and making a start on the graphics. Cladding started, with a bumper of sorts, to help deflect away obsticles Sides taking shape. It's so nice that the weather has picked up these last few weeks rear wheel well cutout Propped up for easier drilling Looks like some sort of APC here Paint My crib sheet Obligatory dog helper shot And this is how far I got today. Still got the other three sides to start, and still lots of stencisl to be made for this side too. But it came out quite well I am going to remake the front arches, as now it's in paint, they look awful I'll jigsaw a proper round one.

I use the same wheels and tires on a few billy carts I have built. They take a hammering and don't buckle at all. The tires are a bit average in quality. Not much resistance to sharps etc. But maybe you have a good batch of these great quality Chinese donuts

I also re did the front, so the profile better fits the actual van: still some filler pieces to add, and loads of painting

Absolutely epic. Shouldn't Captain Chaos be driving though as he goes faster than anyone else?

Todays fun, brief electickery prep and some more paint and a seat. Dashboard prep: Got a load of these brass placks (plaques?) from an old office when it closed, and, well, this one seemed useful as a 'dashboard' Reverse side cleaned up A bunch of switches Holes drilled Switches. thers main power, a horn (maybe) and a switch for each light bar, just so they will flash at different rates reverse common live started, and thats as far as I got yesterday evening I also picked up this seat from a very generous fellow Area 52-er looking good Early start this morning with the dog. Post lawn cut, it's time for some more paint bumper over-riders More paint My three point harness trial fitted. Spot the stupid mistake here. rear light bar placement checks, to clear the roll over bar More paint masking Stencil making - the card one was fine for painting on flat horizontal surfaces, but no good for the back of the kart, as it's tricky to tip on it's end Quick test, seems ok, it'll need some outlining though. All the excitement was too much for the dog More work on the sides Wipers borrowed from my MG Realied I was being an idiot with the harness, so fitted it properly fitment selfie The seat isn't bolted down yet, but everything looks like it'll fit. nice

More Electrics: More soldering Mounted to a bit of ply, note the relate for the horn Off On It's going to fit something like this In easy reach from the seat Also, some new switches arrived today, so I've replaced the main power switch with one of those silly fighter pilot ones With LED
