Currently in the workshop is this 17 year old Impreza Its in for Dinitrol underbody treatment After a session of delousing the loose rust & treating it And this was after it had been steam cleaned Masked up Sometime later - a few areas to check in the morning to ensure that I have not missed anywhere and the masking can come off and the wheels back on Now it just so happens that I often given thought to an alternative drive train for the Jowett Javelin and I have a Javelin in the workshop alongside the Impreza - if I was ever going to do it would be with a boxer engine - and with the 2 cars side by side things looked close enough on the wheel base front hence I found 5 mins with a tape measure - its probably quite doable - Javelin wheelbase is + 50mm longer - Impreza track width on its current alloy rims is + 100mm - they would be quite a lot to do to get it to work and the thought that it would end up Q plated sort of puts me off - back to the drawing board then

the following is related to Bradfords and is a distraction so may be suitable for this thread:
Searching for something else I came across a report in Motor Sport (https://www.motorsportmagazine.com/archive/article/march-1954/16/reports-two-rallies) from 1954 which mentions that fairly well-known rally driver, A.E. Bengry, came second in the Herefordshire Road Trial the previous month - in a Bradford Van! It was a regularity trial rather than a speed event, but nonetheless ...
For the record, there were '19 entries, which included 10 saloons, a van and a pick-up. ... The makes represented ranged from Austin 7-h.p., 10-h.p. and A90, A40 pick-up and Bradford van, to a bevy of M.G.s, a Morgan and a Frazer-Nash. Three lady members competed.'

Thanks for this - really interesting that a Bradford Van of 2 cylinders / 1000cc was up against such capable cars of the time - I have passed the info / link on to the Club registrar for the Bradford along with the editor of our club magazine

Was a right pain to get started as the bores had gone oval a bit.

In that case you owned a 'Bristol Crawler' they were available with the option of Jowett, Austin, Douglas & Anzani engines - pic below This is the Jowett engine version and probably the rarest engined type in survival

My dad had one of those Bristol crawlers for a brief while when I was a boy.

My worst worry about dying is my wife selling my stuff for what I told her it cost...

My dad had one of those Bristol crawlers for a brief while when I was a boy. So did a nursery that Dad used to buy stuff for the shop from. I'd be about 10, but coveted that thing. No idea which engine it had though.

Have something left over from my previous lambretta restoration that might be of interest to your scooter contact

Fairly rare but an absolute bag of fun thing to drive - I can readily have far more fun in something like this than any so called supercar

Please sir, may I ask a question or two?
In the photo of the engine... There appears to be a pipe from the radiator header tank to the inlet manifold. Is that to heat the manifold to stop it icing?
And, that thing that looks like a diaphram by the oil filler with the black pipe that runs down towards the cylinder connecting to the copper pipe that goes into the cabin. What's that all about!? I'm guessing - oil pump and some sort of pressure gauge. But it's a bit odd if it is.
James
PS if you tell me it turns the air conditioning on I'm not going to believe you!
