You are welcome to have a chat with me about the NSRA..... Are you NSRA people then Hannah? Sorry - I don't get around much on RR. I tend to stick to my own thread so I don't really know many people on here beyond the people who drop in to my thread or are part of BNMAC. Do you think the NSRA might have an interest based on the chatter so far?

=== Come on Lucky Seven, come down there with me one Wednesday evening and we can be the advance scouting party.

Sadly, I can't make it this Wednesday. Because life in the way Is Andy "Papercup" still involved with the club? He was at the Speed Trials with his KTM. Used to have an LS-engined RX-7. He always seemed to me the sort of guy who'd motivate a bit of progress

I may have met him. I may not. I only recall Len the chairman; and an old bloke who used to drive to the club house !FROM WALES! every week and was a retired top fuel drag racer who looked like Penfold out of Dangermouse, and a bloke who lives in Brighton who had purchased a Ferrari very cheap (not PaulG off here who also purchased a cheap Ferrari) and he was something of a local celebrity for having a Ferrari parked outside his modest semi. He was a really nice bloke too but didn't come down very often. It was many years ago that I was going down there regularly.

In fact, does anyone out there in the Brighton area fancy agreeing to drop in one Wednesday evening on the pretext of being potentially interested in membership? We could make it an informal RR meet-up and also chat to some of the key members there. 100% up for it. I'm up for joining and trying to get them to shift it up a gear. Clearly they need help with it, and if you were able to make it even half of what Goodwood is then it would be phenomenal. Edit: I will make the time whenever to go down.

Hoping Hannah comes back to discuss it too.

I'm not local, I'm in Canterbury, but I used to go to the speed trials when I was a child with my dad. I have so many memories of going down and seeing the promenade packed out, with the smell of two-stroke oil filling the air. I'd hate to see it lost, and I'd love to be involved in making it something a lot bigger.

Okay, great. We have the makings of a task force.
I do personally think that step 1 will be to go back to the club and re-introduce myself/others.
So maybe if you can get down here on a Wednesday evening we could drop in and say hello.
I've just checked and that's a 180 mile 4 hour round trip for you EEEEK so maybe not. I'll drop in at some point though and see if I can get chatting to Len in my special touchy-feely way.
=)

Do you fancy having a chat about what might be possible then as per your suggestion, and maybe dropping in to the club one evening to get a feel for the challenge?

Okay matey. Potentially next week then?
Doesn't look like Hannah is coming back in a hurry, and we aren't RetroRides endorsed for this recce so there's a chance this becomes nothing more than a four hour round trip to be largely ignored in a damp basement. I'm slightly worried you might be wasting your own time therefore but if you are sure you fancy doing it we could aim for next Wednesday.
On the upside... driving four hours to be ignored in a damp basement does automatically grant you lifelong VIP membership to the prestigious BNMAC.

I almost ended up there with Green Car this year but other things caused me to miss it.
Only down the road from where I grew up, one of my cars has been there, just not with me driving, it's almost a right of passage that I go.
I'll join their motor club at the start of next year and put an entry in and let you know how it goes from a competitors point of view, I'm presuming it's run as a timed sprint so National B Sprint licence?

Possibly the first clear death knell to sound for the Brighton Speed Trials, as well as the London to Brighton and the VW gathering, plus various other meets that take place... www.theargus.co.uk/news/18057472.review-new-seafront-events-say-greens/?fbclid=IwAR29OP3WP3LlwFvcWgYR7UEtyVSDrM9158xxZXTWHfXNyw7OKxVZb8eD2tUGreen Party (the ruling party in Brighton & Hove) are calling for review of sea front events and have a specific focus on reviewing anything that involves combustion engines, because "In twenty years time Brighton will be under water". It's not a done deal yet, but this has been coming down the track for a long time and now it seems they're starting to get their teeth into it. What will follow this will be a general ban of certain classifications and types of vehicles from Brighton centre. That will then spread outwards through Hove.

Green Councillor states half the events on the promenade involve combustion engines... so we're going to cut our tourism by 50% by making them unwelcome. Genius Hilariously, the London to Brighton CYCLE ride probably causes more I.C.E. pollution and congestion than any two of the dedicated vehicular events... because it has twice the attendance of any of them, but because the trains refuse to convey bicycles, all the contestants have to return via road vehicles The Labour Councillor who claims horrendous congestion is caused by the vehicle events is at best disingenuous, at worst outright lying, certainly about the "Volkswagen Rally". I've been on the Brighton Breeze and the organisers specify separate routes for different vehicle types into the City, deliberately chosen to minimise traffic problems. I've used two of these different routes in different VWs and neither has been in any way more congested than any other day trying to navigate across Brighton in any form of transport. The only time there's any kind of queue is getting onto Madeira Drive iteslf As usual, never let the facts intrude on a good single-interest SJW agenda

SJW agenda Did you just unironically use the term "SJW agenda" about councilors attempting to be seen to do something that goes with their "green" credentials (you know, the reason they got elected)? Next thing you'll be blaming it on millennial snowflakes, and Greta Thunberg, when clearly this has been in the works longer than either of those two things have existed. I remember the Speed trials being under threat in the mid 90's. There are a lot of car events on Maderia Drive across the summer and I suspect a subset of those will carry on and those people will have to make the best case. Now if the organising body for Brighton Speed Trials is as feckless as the-artist-formerly-known-as-quatermass points out, the event could well be in trouble. The vintage run has obviously be marred by accidents over the last few years too. Will Brighton Breeze or Incarnation, or the L2B Mini Run or any number of other events be able to make better cases to carry on. Maybe.

Their fecklessness has, oddly and counter-intuitively, seen them through a few existential threats over the years I've known them. So part of me wonders whether in spite of it all, it's actually the thing that saves them in the end! Maybe they somehow manage to seem 'mostly harmless' at key negotiation points and crawl under the blanket laid down to try and stop them. I don't know. It's a highly implausible working theory I thought up just now. Also, I need to remember to swap back to my Quatermass identity for all non-progress-thread related posts. I've stopped bothering/forgotten. It was supposed to be operating a clean and surgical identity flip switch system and then after a few weeks I got lazy.

The SJW agenda on which they were elected 🙄. I'm glad you used inverted commas around the "green" credentials because the sort of "green" credentials that get councillors elected somewhere with as many students and middle class virtue signallers as Brighton ( and Hove, actually) are clearly not the same green credentials as would go any way toward "saving" the planet or improving the immediate environment. I could go on, having spent a good ten years working in conservation (before it was trendy) and a few years at college earning an HND in Environmental Conservation and Land Management, it's actually something I know quite a bit about. But as this is a car forum and as we're often exhorted to post photos of cool old cars rather than discuss The World in a negative light, maybe this isnt the correct venue. But as for dissing Saint Greta, how dare you! 😂 She's clearly the sole voice of reason in a world gone mad, no matter how much behind the scenes she may prove to be an unwitting puppet of people with their own self interest
