Hi, I'm considering building a car using a monocoque that will be structurally modified. The car will mostly be built by myself using a current monocoque, parts from a donor car (and parts of its monocoque) along with some custom parts for my own personal use. I'm fully aware it will need IVA-ing and be issued with a new identity. (due to its monocoque being modified and I'm aware it will most likely end up on a q plate.) My query is - will this come under the Amateur Built vehicle category and as such require BIVA rather than full IVA? Or have I completely misinterpreted the DVSA literature (on the Amateur built declaration form, IVA 4, there is a section that states "The vehicle has been registered in the UK and has been subsequently subject to structural modification, such that it will be issued with a new identity")

Clip on plastic edging of the correct radius (5mm dia if I remember correctly), from most I have seen it seems to be a poor quality and falls off pretty quickly afterwards!

Have a good read through the blackpopracing thread - Mark has overcome all the hurdles to get his car through BIVA.

Also www.locostbuilders.co.uk - it’s very quiet these days but there are dozens of people on there that have been through BIVA and know the intricacies of the rule book inside out.

Looking at your list of cars in your sig, I'm guessing at a 4wd Fiesta! And as it's gutters that are causing a problem, then it's an early one? The later a base car, usually the easier BIVA is, as the manufacturer has already been through all the hassles of radius testing. I've got a project in mind that would use lots of stock stuff for the test, then remove most of it as dead weight once it's passed.

Yes , I'm considering either 4WD or RWD, not 100% decided on that part yet. I need to be sure I can get it through a BIVA before I commit. If I think I will struggle I'll change the base car for something a bit newer! I don't want to build a car and have the DVLA remove the right to its registration - so will be doing it properly from the get go.

Ha! I'm good, me!
I believe that as soon as you cut into the monocoque, you lose the reg, so if it's a private plate, or one with sentimental value, put it on retention first. I think you are going to be stuck with a Q after BIVA, but as Kev (Kapri) says, q for quality!

I think you are going to be stuck with a Q after BIVA, but as Kev (Kapri) says, q for quality! That’s correct, once you alter the monocoque you loose the registration. It’s nothing special so no need for retention. I knew from the outset if I go down this route I’ll be getting a Q. Rather that and have it registered correctly than risk getting caught!

Quite right. Build it correctly and no worries for the future. There's that awesome mk6 cosworth fiesta that's been all over the net for the last few years, don't know if it's been through BIVA, but I don't think it would present a major problem. If Red Victor 3 can get through, anything can!
