Mercedes-Benz W201 190 2.0 Automatic - Carburettor Model
1986 'C' Registration
Moss Green (803) with Period Green Cloth Interior
MOT until May 2019
169k Miles It doesn't get much more retro than this! The exterior colour, the period interior, the way it look and drives defines this as a proper retro classic. Treat yourself to a perfectly usable daily classic that will outlive most of us! Coming up to Christmas, the wife has put her foot down and stated I need to get rid of some of my cars (my W124 E200 Estate and Volvo V70 T5 to follow within the next week or so). I have nowhere to store them, they aren't getting the use they deserve and I think the neighbours might be getting a bit annoyed, so here it is for sale. This is an early 2.0 carburettor model, hence 190 and not 190E. It runs really well for a 32 year old car, there are no current fluid leaks. No overheating - cooling fan kicks in when it should. The heating system works amazingly well and it gets like a sauna inside the car! Being an old carb, you need to let it warm up on a cold start just to let the old girl settle down on idle. Once it's warm, it runs great. Pulls well and will happily sit at 70+ mph on the motorway. Gearbox changes fine, but would benefit from a fluid and filter service, and can be a bit 'clonky', especially when cold. Still, it goes through all gears and hits top gear fine. Suspension on these early Mercedes is sublime - it effortlessly irons out all uneven surfaces and the thing just glides along like a magic carpet. Modern cars simply can't touch the ride quality and engineering of these. Brakes are good and there is no shuddering when braking. The turning circle on these makes a London Taxi All 4 tyres have decent tread and the steel wheels have the correct 190 wheel trims. I completed a 200 mile round trip yesterday, and it was a joy to drive. No issues whatsoever, it just ate up the miles. The colour really suits this era of car (Moss Green, Paint Code 803), and brings back fond memories of seeing them back in the late 80s owned by family members. Everyone looks at it, so many people come up to you when you park up and say how nice it is to see one of them, how they haven't seen one in years, etc. Even on the M4 yesterday, I'm sure everyone was pointing at the car in amazement, seeing it hustled along at speed in the 3rd lane! In generally decent condition, but it isn't mint or concours (KGF Cars and other well known outfits will sell you a pristine example, if that's what you are after). It is, however, a respectable classic car in presentable condition. It has been resprayed at some point, however, it's not the best job. Will benefit from a good flat and polish. There are a few bubbles appearing on the front wings, but this is just surface rust. All door shuts are clean and free from rot. The car is generally solid throughout, with no mention of rot on the current MOT (just for brake pipes). This isn't the usual rot box, and won't take much to make it a much better example. The interior is all solid and in one piece. No major rips or tears on the seats. Just the usual wear on the driver's seat bolster. Talking of seats, these are so comfortable - long journeys are a pleasure and you get out feeling fresh and free from aches that modern cars give you! The dashboard has a few cracks on there (common, and E30s also suffer from this). No warning lights on the dash. Everything works as it should, apart from the stereo, which has a mind of it's own. Car has to be locked from passenger front door. Wind up windows all round, so no regulator failures to worry about. Sunroof needs a new seal, but doesn't currently leak. I love the car and the way it drives, and again, I think it will start to creep in value, but I have no room and you can't keep them all. Putting it here on RR for a few days, then will be going in the dastardly auction site known as eBay later this week. Comes with: 2 x Keys, Current MOT Certificate, MOT History Printout, V5 Logbook. Located in Bracknell, Berkshire, RG12 post code. Please call me on 07984 395400.

My god that is stunning.
Unless I am mistaken, very early (circa 1982) W201s had double W123 style windscreen wipers. Many years ago someone was selling such a car on this very forum. I’ve done a bit of research and can’t find any reference to such wipers anywhere. I’m sure that I’m not going mad.

You know the weird thing is, I was speaking to my work colleague about this same very topic. But, from what I have seen, all 190 and W124 had the single wiper set up (and how ingenious a design it is!).

Ok, I am not going mad, well maybe a little bit! I found an old advert from this forum dating back to January 2011 for an early W201. I have messaged the seller if he still has a photo of the front of the car but for now have this: Another W201 liker has referred to the non panoramic wiper. Unfortunately I can't remember what we got so excited about.

Been driving around in this today and it's a lovely old thing to smoke around in.
Open to sensible offers, and could do with it out the way before Xmas.

That’s the curse word. You can’t beat the drabness of the early 190 look. And the keep fit window winders and trims add to the experience.
Not a word of the above is sarcasm, either. It’s a beauty.

Thank you, I get exactly what you are saying. Feels weird leaning over to wind down the window to talk to someone! But, less to go wrong I suppose. Orange indicators also suit it as well.

Unfortunately I can't remember what we got so excited about. The very early cars had a non-panoramic (but still single) wiper. That is to say, it swept in a semi circular arc, leaving fairly large unswept areas in the two top corners. This was addressed around 10 months into production when the "panoramic" wiper as fitted to the W124 was introduced which "reached" up into the top corners by way of its clever mechanism. These early cars are readily indentifiable by the small base of the wiper arm and a single washer jet in the middle of the bonnet as opposed to the twin jets fitted on all subsequent W201s. Also the early UK cars had no side repeaters.

That's interesting to know.
Another thing I have never quite understood on these and the W124 models:
Why are they wing mirrors different shapes, and why is the offside one that's electric and the other one manual adjustment?!

Another thing I have never quite understood on these and the W124 models: Why are they wing mirrors different shapes, and why is the offside one that's electric and the other one manual adjustment?! The mirrors were like that for typically (for Mercedes at the time) practical reasons. The smaller nearside mirror was to lessen the chance of it hitting parked cars in town and had electrical adjustment to save the driver leaning across to adjust it - whereas it was no harder for the driver to adjust a manual lever, which was within reach, than it would be moving an electrical switch.

Wing mirrors are different sizes because an engineer at Mercedes sat down with a scale drawing and a straight edge and worked out the field of view required for each mirror. Because the passenger mirror is further away from the driver it is smaller for the same field of view. So the passenger mirror is smaller or, more accurately, narrower
This means there were four unique mirrors for the W201 and eight for the W124. Coupe & Cabrio mirrors are a different shape as the windscreen rake is different
