Is there anything that says the rear light needs to be central? I know some bikes have side mounted plates etc
I’m wanting to tunnel a rear light but off centre (just because I possibly can) then fit numberplate on a side mount

It might be best to check the MOT requirements, I'm sure its online. However, I've had side mounted years ago and I'm fairly sure the requirement is just for it to be visible from the rear.

No the lamp does not need to be central, however, the rear reflector does!

No the lamp does not need to be central, however, the rear reflector does! Check the new Indian scout bobber - the rear lights are combined with the indicators as are some harleys

Reflector you say, hadn’t thought about that 🤔 You mean the stick-on reflector that fell off after the MOT, officer?

Can't help with the actual regulations but search for "hardtail chop images" and you'll find plenty of UK bikes with side-mounted plates & rear lights

Don't forget kids, having an MOT does not mean the vehicle meets C&U regs for the type and age of vehicle. You can still be done if the Po-Po pick up on something. I checked out the bare minimum requirements for using a moped legally on the road and (eventually) got a very useful reply from a lady at the DfT.
