That looks astonishingly rust free compared to anything we'd find over here in the UK! Thats cos any worth having (and a good few that weren't too) got shipped back by Russian fishermen who'd make a proffit selling them back home. Remember reading an article where 18 of them were crammed onto a small trawler that had put into Hull briefly. There was no deck space left paul99 yes indeed...I have it on good authority that that story is true Also there was at one point a general warning issued to all shipping to avoid shallow areas as Russian ship crews were stripping cars from uk en route then shoving the bare shells over the side as components would incur no import duty or “awkward questions”/paperwork at home

Thanks to everyone thats interested and those who commented I must admit I'm feeling the burden of responsibility to keep you all entertained but don’t worry I'm loving it Update time methinks! Pics incoming In the last update I mentioned snow!....this rapidly became torrential freezing rain (a cloudburst in fact) ...well,game over I thought I resigned myself to continuing what has become the “epic saga” of fitting a new kitchen in the (soon to be) b&b apartment in my house (Yawn!) After spending twenty minutes of futile and ultimately pointless effort trying to find my cordless screwdriver ...I reached the point where I had no option other than to use a normal one . As I was reaching for the aforementioned normal screwdriver (which of course was instantly to hand in its usual place! ) I happened to glance out of the window Bright sunshine met my my gaze ....Game on .....so without even turning a screw in that bothersome kitchen ...I was off and out My mate Sanyi was no where to be seen so I busied myself by getting the previously unopened bonnet open! Pulling the bonnet pull under the dash only resulted in a sickening twang which signified the cable snapping Using a combination of garden twigs and well chosen swear words ....

Yes we have a result! Now is there an engine there? Yes there is! And indeed further investigation reveals that not only is it there but its complete and turns by hand....phew thats a relief! Now I should mention that whilst tinkering with my parts I had managed to gather a crowd “Afternoon ladies” Now..don't tell my wife..but in my youth I was always “popular with the birds” and at the ripe old age of 48 its nice to know that I still am

It was at this point that Sanyi turned up After exchanging pleasantries his frustration was obvious as it turns out that yesterday he had asked me to unseize one of the rear brakes....and apparently I had understood and agreed to do so lost in translation is the phrase that springs to mind! So when he arrived to find me sitting on a discarded tractor tyre uploading pics for you lot instead of basking in the glory of having unseized the aforementioned brake drum he was not amused to say the least Anyway after giving me a suitable dressing down and issuing me with a yellow card we set to work One hour later (yes seriously) we were good to go..i have encountered a lot of seized brake drums in my time but this one takes the prize! (Aluminium drum with steel liner..oh what joy!)

Ok so here is where the fun starts Unfortunately having unseized the brakes on my Lada (which actually means “harmony” in Russian) It was judged as being able to be pulled up Sanyis Very steep drive by his little Japanese tractor....therefore no need to recommission the 1956 Steyr Don’t worry though we will be seeing and hearing that in the future if I’ve got anything to do with it! As you can imagine after an hour of hammering, levering etc in what had now developed into a gentle freezing drizzle I was well ready for a break But No..he was having none of that! Antony...move your Citroen onto the road he said in no uncertain terms! I did so immediately and upon returning was ordered to sit in the lada “AND STEER!” Trust me when I say there was literally no time or opportunity to take pics as I was launched on the end of a three foot “tow rope” consisting of knotted seatbelts behind a very small tractor up a very very steep driveway with one of those really sharply spiked farming attatchments at the back of it pointing at my face driven by a very busy man who obviously has no time to waste and better things to do than entertain some Englishman whos posting on some forum:D Finally we reached the top of his driveway......victory Naturally at this point I assumed we would pause for a breather and congratularatory handshake etc Nope...without so much as a “by your leave” Sanyi proceeded to propel me (at breakneck speed I might add!) down the road in the direction of my house It was at this point that after checking my rear view mirror (only to find there was no glass in it!) I remembered that my wallet..passport...money...car keys..phone..and digital camera were sitting on the roof of my citroen dyane parked on the street outside his rapidly disappearing house I took a moment to look over my shoulder at my disappearing life but was brought rapidly back to the situation in hand by a sudden jolt Sanyi had changed into second gear!...faster and ever faster we went by now my hands were beginning to cramp due to the death grip I was maintaining on the steering wheel! Thoughts of passports wallets etc long gone I began to pray A strange sense of calm and acceptance washed over me...the fact that I had no brakes there were spikes 3 feet in front of me and we were approaching a very steep downhill section suddenly didnt matter....ive never felt happier... If the last thing I see is the back of Sanyis head and a huge rusty spike piercing my cerebral cortex at least I died happy doing what I love

Entertaining as always! Your trip reminds me of several of my car-moves in my youth, cars wit no windows, barely any brakes or steering. It is a miracle I am still alive. Great to see you survived and can continue on this saga of rust and stench :-)

Wau, that is old Lada. Wasn't 73 first year they made them? Are you going to restore it to original glory or build it with 1700cc big block? I've had 2or 3 square lamps and one round lamp, only miss the round one.

I have a funny feeling that I cycled past your house a couple of years ago, on an ill fated attempt to go around the lake. On a BMX with a trailer on it,led by someone with no sense of direction on the hottest day of the year. And then got flooded out in a tent that night in a thunderstorm.

Remember reading an article where 18 of them were crammed onto a small trawler that had put into Hull briefly. There was no deck space left That comment brings back memories of seeing ships leaving the docks at Kings Lynn, Norfolk, with Ladas tied onto every conceivable place available, and a few just hanging there on sky hooks. Whether they all made it back, I do not know. Clearly there must have been a market for secondhand Ladas, otherwise why would they have bothered. One man's junk is another man's gold.
