Hi All,
I've got a question that I just don't confidently know the answer to.
Those of you who follow my build thread will know that my steering rack was leaking like crazy into the bellows. This after having had a proper professional rebuild by a well reputed person who does everything from performance racing racks to oldtimer one off revisions. The Granada in standard form is know for this and many parts suppliers shy away from anything to do with the racks. In my 14 years of ownership I once replaced the rack in an otherwise fully original system as it was leaking. Years later this rack developed it's own leak. It is this rack that I've had rebuilt.
The question I have is this: if the original system had an 8mm inner diameter hose/pipe and I have now replaced part of that with a smaller diameter line of 6mm to connect two systems, will that increase pressure in the system? Could that be enough of a pressure increase to cause leaks?
Now, there's a final twist. As I have a Cosworth BOB engine I use the pump from that engine. Is there a way of finding out if that pump supplies the same level of pressure as the original one? I presume that PAS systems in general work on sort of a standard narrow range of pressures. I also know for a fact that this engine, pump and rack combo, right down to the same piece of smaller id pipe has been used by a friend in a Granada sedan without any issue. So I assumed I would be fine too especially on a brand new rebuilt unit.
I'm just wondering if I'm unfortunate and struck by a problem the Granada is know for anyway or if I may have contributed to making this problem worse.
Just looking for input really...
