Hi All,
I'm looking at importing a 1976 volvo 242 from america that has a salvage title against it. The general condition of the car is poor, needs a full respray at the bare minimum but everything looks straight in the photos (i will pay to get it inspected and loads of pictures of the chassis if i decide to go for it)
I am wanting to import this vehicle and register it on the road over here, have any of you guys ever done such a thing? do any of you know if it will get a category (A,B,S,N?) assigned to the car?
I know that it can be re-registered in the US but it would have a previous salvage title recorded against the car.
I have asked the DVLA and it sounds like they are saying it can be registered but no idea if it will be assigned a category against it:
The following documents are acceptable to allocate an age related mark to an American imported vehicle that is presented for registration:
• Certificate of Origin
• Certificate of Title
• Certificate of Sale
• Certificate of Lien Sale
Other documents issued by the State's Vehicle Department stating the vehicles year of model may also be accepted to allocate an age related GB mark:
• salvage certificates or
• dating evidence from a manufacturer or dating companies/clubs.
Thanks, Adam

They will want it fully restored and roadworthy before registering it as it will currently have a non operational title.
It will get a marker against it IF the title it is imported on shows it.

Insurance companies grade the cars A / B / N / S when they pay out. This information is relayed to the DVLA to mark cars as scrapped or damaged. As there's no insurance company involved while registering an import and the DVLA have no idea what the car was involved in previously, it won't receive a grade for its past life in the US.
If you're still concerned, don't use the title to register the car and have a dating letter drawn up from the club who represent Volvo for the DVLA.
I brought a car over from France that was previously registered here and had a Cat C marker. When re-registered it was no longer marked Cat C. Just "Previously registered overseas. Manufactured 1996".

Thanks for the replies.
I'm not sure it will have to be fully restored from what i have read, just road worthy? i.e. pass an MOT unless i have read it wrong.
thanks for the reply ZX, i thought the category system was probably just an UK insurance grading and you've answered that for me. Great idea to use a dating letter, thanks!
one thing that is annoying is that i can't do a vin check on the vehicle due to it having a 15 digit vin and no websites seem to be able to supply a 15 digit vin vehicles history.
Thanks for the help, Adam

A 242 is a great choice. Re getting the VIN decoded, there’s someone on the UK Volvo forum who works for a dealer and can get VIN’s decoded. Not sure how far back in history he can go, but it’s worth registering on the site. There’s some useful info and some knowledgeable members. Www.Volvoforums.org.uk

thanks for the info, i am on volvo forums too.
i'm currently in the process of building a B230FT 16V turbo engine, forged rods & pistons and lots of other goodies. originally it was going into a 940 but i changed my mind and wanted something that is more of a classic.
a company called epic vin has managed to do a vin scan on it. apparently it is clean with no claims or even a salvage title recorded against it.

Nice. Look forward to seeing how you get on. I had a ‘68 145S a while back, and spotted a gold 72 142 GL for sale in the US last year. It looked fabulous. Love the two door saloons.

Thanks for the help, Adam See, here we go again with opinions NOT facts Friend went through this very scenario but with an older car and they wanted a FULL restoration (due to non operational title /salvage )not just roadworthy ie MOT even though it didn't NEED an MOT .

That sounds like the "reconstructed classic vehicles" route. It requires more restoration than an MOT and would be appropriate where a vehicle has been re-shelled, modified or rebuilt. Was this a running and driving vehicle with its original components? Or one that had to be restored in the first place? The DVLA would usually request this procedure if they have doubts about a cars originality and/or age. It's possible a salvage title would trigger this but there's plenty of other things that could flag up during registration.

I have got an inspection carried out on the vehicle and they found it quite badly rusted in a few places - not necessarily terminal rust but too much for my liking. www.copart.com/lot/26165929I was hoping it would have been the true 'Californian rust free car' that people always say when selling a California car but no such look, haha. my 242 search continues. Thanks for your replies especially yours kapri, i found the capital letters very useful Thanks, Adam

You can register it on the salvage title. I'll double check but I'm sure a mate has.
The main thing is the car has to be either MOTable or mostly complete in order to get registered, as The Jackeria found out with his. This is partly because the car HAS to get taxed when it is registered. Of course, it either clearly needs to be roadworthy if a 40+ year old car or MOT'd. I did the latter to avoid the hassle and see that the car was safe.
It will these days say on the Logbook that it was a salvage car, something like "car reconstructed from used parts" or something to that effect. It's what happened with a mate of mine.

Thanks, i am probably no longer getting a salvage titled vehicle but it is definitely worth knowing the inns and outs of it so i can consider buying one if i see another that tickles my fancy.
Thanks, Adam

Just for future reference, I just registered a Salvage titled California import Mercedes.....it was running and complete, but had the salvage title...Had no problems, although the V5 does say "Rebuilt from parts that may not be new"

I've managed to find a lovely orange '75 242 in Netherlands that i've bought, hopefully take delivery of it next week and get it registered. Can't wait.

I'm not trying to put ideas in your head, but....... haha, i have just purchased coilovers and already have some 17" steel wheels. I really need to make a build thread on here, i have one on another forum but it doesn't seem to generate any interest. I have finally received my V5 with reg number yesterday, just waiting for plates (hopefully tomorrow) and i can finally go for a drive! I delayed the registration process by accident by not sending the ORIGINAL export document (i sent a photocopy) so my first V55 application got declined, i sent another V55 off with the original export document and all the other relevant paperwork required and got my V5 in just over 2 weeks later. a quick picture of how she stands now (windscreen trim not fitted due to picture being taken after windscreen replacement):
