Hi all just considering the possibilities of creating some fake patina on my Rover I was hopoing someone here might have used that rust effect paint, and can give a real world view on it? I was thinking of doing wing tops, body lines etc, along with a bit of sanding through to get an old patina affect until I can get round to a proper(ish) paint job, and just to try techniques really does it give a different finish if say you sponge it on rather than spray or brush? - what is te coverage like? does it stain/rub/run off? think thats all, anyone handy with photoshop able to give this a quick virtual rust? Thanks -

i would say leave it as is looks nice. i wouldn't use the fake rust on it, if your looking on painting it later on. its just metal powder put in paint then sand top when dry and a peroxide acid to make it rust quick. you will have to take this all off if your looking on a good paint job later, any thing u miss will rust through the new paint

If you must, then an airbrush and some brown paint?...preferably on a clear vinyl wrap so you can remove it...

Since going to a car show many years ago, & seeing a pick up truck made up to look old and abandoned,i was surprised to see the bed was solid, brand new and shiny SHINY ! What a put off! having fake patina is just that...FAKE, if you want it to look worn, take an angle grinder or glass paper, give it a good going over, throw a few buckets over it, along with some rusty nails, and leave it.... strip it back and drive it! it won't take long, just leave the fake curse word at halfords then go to the £1 shop and buy some £1.23p scourers! (in between the nails and the buckets of water.

Here's my tip for what its worth - 'DON'T DO IT' I was fully prepared for that answer to come up. I'm not completely sold on the idea myself - but feel like a change Different - Add some racing roundels in white / Old English White and a black number to the doors - in fact 'P4' would be very apt - drivers name on the osf door - union jack logo on the boot & black insulation tape in cross format on the headlights - all readily & cheaply achievable with some vinyl - its also reversible - and it would look mighty fine ! - but please leave the fake tin on the shelf

The 'best' use of fake patina rust paint I ever saw was on a Reliant Regal (?) van.
The owner claimed it had been done by a film company.

It will cost more but if you're unsure it's worth looking into weathered wraps as they can just be peeled off when bored, although might cause paint damage depending on quality of current paint

Does not matter what car they are on, bullet holes look tacky! And what is the point of having a vehicle look dirty....with shiny wheels? ??

Tbh if your going to do this I would change the colour. If you want to go for more period looking car , perhaps like a used older careworn period modded survivor ? I would key it back and paint it a French or royal blue sort of colour and do it in a way that it's not shiny etc. I only suggest this as I assume the current colour is not standard anyway . Just a suggestion like !

If you are planning on painting it again anyway then you might as well have a play around with it. I'm not a fan of rust paint but some fake patina can look really good on a car like that if done right.

Judging by the kind of cars that get the treatment, Fauxtina has had its day... ( the kind of street rodders that were doing pastel paint, tweed interiors, & billet a while ago are doing fauxtina now ) When you live where I do ( Arizona ), it makes sense as a finish. Its bone dry here, so cars don't rust. But the sun will bake a nice paint job, damaging it. So that's why I still use it. Because for me, its practical. With my '28, scuff it up every couple of years, and leave it bare metal. And I have a '58 Fiat 500 that has been in Arizona from new. So the paint is completely baked off, surface rust, but no rust damage ( holes ), other than the floorboards. Which I'll try to build without changing anything to the outside. I'd prefer a nice paintjob on it, but it will have to live outside when its done so I'll postpone that until I have garage space for it... And please don't clearcoat 'tina. That is like putting a sweater on a poodle...

Tell you what would look good on that and be cheap to do. Get some subtle shades of purple/violet and scallop it Watson style, spider caps and trim rings, job done

Its halfway to the cafe racer look, so why not do that? It could be a proper gentlemans cafe racer. Some cars look good with the fake patina look, but id imagine it quite an art to making it look right, generaly I think if you're going to go to the effort of doing something with a car, you might as well make it look nice. Cafe racer with worn paint on the top of the front wings, survivor look doesnt need to be full-on rat look.
