I’ve finally bought primer, paint, lacquer and some grit paper. But what’s the process. I’ve watched a few videos on YouTube and they make it look very easy.
I’m not keeping the tyres that are on the wheels so they are coming off. Which grit do I use first. Should I pressure wash and degrease the wheels first?

Have done a few wheels over the years but to start with it depends how bad they are. Do you have any pictures? I like to use Etch primer.

No. Etch primer is specifically used to etch/key itself to aluminium alloy or similar reactive (i.e., oxidises quickly) metals. Normal primer will most likely rapidly flake off!
Alas, the same applies to clear coat lacquers used on polished alloy wheels - it will often flake off quickly, particularly if chipped and water creeps in.

Degrease and clean the wheels. Scrape any loose or bubbling paint. Use a fine file on any deep scrapes. Then start flatting them with 90 or 120 grit paper and work up to about 400. Use it on a block whenever you can Then prime, flat that with 600 and paint.

Damn so I need to take this primer back and get etch primer instead.
Do I need etch lacquer or is normal lacquer fine?

Are they steel or alloy wheels?
Etch primer is the best for most things. Ordinary primer would be fine for steel.

You can’t topcoat over etch. You need both primers.

If wheels are alloy, clean degrease, sand and then etch prime. Once dry, flat with 600 grit and then prime with normal primer. Flat off again then paint, flat again then laquer. IF wheels are steel, etch primer not needed.
