I've decided I want a side project, something I can muck about with, tastefully modify (perhaps a bit of a sleeper).
Ideally 90's, perhaps late 80's. Want something uncommon but not impossible to get parts for. Doesn't need to be fast, can be made faster later. Under £1500.
Any old turd will do to be honest, ideally petrol/manual. Suggestions?

personally I'd recommend a proton saga but mine's already been project'd and sold subject to payment now. ripe for an early evo engine transplant and perfect sleeper if you leave everything else standard (the complete opposite to my approach which is all show and no do )

I like the Primera, my Dad had an R reg I believe in a naff shade of red, somehow it completely seized in a carpark, I never found out the cause. Its an interesting enough not very exciting to look at car, I would prefer something smaller though (easier to make small cars faster/more nimble).
I've seen some old Hyundai's & a Proton Wira of all things floating around, not sure how available parts will be though.

Not that I'm biased but Carlton/Senator from the 90s, driven from the correct end as well! for £1500 you would get something half decent

I'm a fan of the 5 pot Volvo's, but most left are estates. Hadn't thought of a 924, will keep a look out for those. Preludes are good too, especially as theres tons of engine swap opportunities with Honda stuff.
I like a Cavalier so thats a good shout. Not a fan of the Senator and Carltons are getting a bit hens teeth!
I love 90s Alfa's but those are also thin on the ground especially under £1500. I've already owned a Saab 9000 with the 2.3 turned up to more than the quickest 164 so feel like been there done that.
Mk4/5 Escorts are grabbing my attention right now or even a mk3 Fiesta, never been interested in Fords really, are they any good to work on?
Thanks for all the suggestions!

Volvo 2.3 lpt , put a walking stick and trilby in the back and some awful homemade cushions. Then smoke everyone at the lights.

May I suggest an Alfa 146. Pretty and pretty rare but with fairly common mechanical parts (for 90's Alfas) in Twin Spark guise. Boxer-engined versions are a little more tricky though. Only one on eBay at the moment.

Love the 146 & 145. Saw that one on ebay but hate the bland colour, possibly being too picky.
That Charade is exactly the sort of 90s weird thing I'm talking about, not in a position to buy just yet but it would be an ideal candidate.
Never liked the Celica one bit, won't ever be seen in one!
