B series frontera. burst proof japanese mechanicals, familiar 90s/00s GM engines, bland but comfortable GM interiors, ridiculously cheap, and spacious. selectable 4x4, low range box, generous towing specs, generous payload, rugged body on frame design. front lift comes with a simple adjustment with socket set on torsion bars, rear lift comes with set of cheap (because popular) isuzu springs. I’ve got a ‘99 2.2DTI all its wanted is an alternator over 45,000 miles and it averages 31mpg. Does local lanes most weekends and 1800 mile round trip weekend trips to Switzerland all winter. Most underrated 4x4 ever! I’ve had Shoguns and Fourtracks before and this gets everywhere they did for half the fuel.

These suddenly have me interested Obviously as a conversion. But they seem to make decent money still.

My daily TD5, taken yesterday in the Serengeti. I'm certain I'm getting 30mpg out of this still despite the BFGs. Not lifted at all, but the big wheels have jacked it an inch or two and taking the bumper off has given me all the clearance and presence it needs. Rides... acceptably. Not uncomfortable, not too noisy. I'm quite certain that you could do something similar for a grand or not much more, given a greater choice and timescale.

Never a truer word, my LWB Pajero on BFG’s is the only vehicle to have made my Impreza look economical. Was that the 2.5 or 2.8 you had? I had a 2.5 L200 and a 2.8 challenger and they were both as bad as each other. I’ve heard the Delcias or whatever they’re called are even worse! Mine was a 2.5, I offset it with SVO for a bit but it was getting to be the same price as diesel.

I'm a big fan of Land Rover and appreciate the Discovery. I think the 3 door version is a good way to go as the loss of the 2 rear doors adds rigidity, loses weight and makes for a better looking vehicle. They crop up cheap, needing work, from time to time. This isn't the best example as it's the V8, fun but thirsty, (<20mpg average running), although this particular example has the benefit of LPG. www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1151107

i am pro discovery. (genuinely, we own one, and i defend them frequently in the common "not-a-proper-land-rover" internet discussions)
i think the only downside is that within this budget, J-based truck will be cheap because its undesirable, rather than cheap because its knackered. disco will be cheap because its dodging MOTs due to sills the floor pans and wheel arches are missing.

In 2008 this cost me £750 all in. It survived a no coolant meltdown after I chiseled out and replaced the HT leads and spark plugs. Would recommend. Current prices seem a little higher though.
