... because every few years we have to go through this. Just because I don't want off topic conversation about your chosen subject of the day, be that armistice day, music, charity runs, politics, whatever's on telly, or any of a million other things, that doesn't make me a bad person, or someone not broadly supportive of whatever subject may be at hand. It just means I want to run a forum about cool old cars and that is the only thing it is about (pretty much), there are many other places to discuss how much you love our troops, or second hand war stories from the pub, this place though, this place is a car place. I'm sure someone will now start a thread of war machinery (as is the traditional response over the last fifteen or so years whenever I delete or lock one of these threads).

To be fair, this section says it's for "inspiration", quite a lot of inspiration to be had from the armed forces. *sigh* about cool old cars... or we could just fill it with movies and music and tv and people and whatever else we find inspirational. Take it to facebook. RR is our place to talk cool old cars (which you can also do on facebook too, if you fancy it). That's a shame on many levels. We're hardly discussing typical Facebook rubbish are we? As already pointed out, the only reason we have such freedoms is due these guys and girls... As a further point, we owe the WWII lot for hot-rods! The LRDG guys probably inspired a few Landie owners, the opposing side gave us Beetles! How many NATO green cars have been seen on this forum? I do appreciate you only "anchored" the thread instead of locking it, but I feel it's a little short-sighted, as it's such an emotive subject that has affected all of us and our families, and even just a quick think outside the box can relate it cars...

If this keeps happening, for fifteen years, maybe a "general general" section might be in order? I've no idea how much hassle that would cause you, I'm not very IT (I'm not even on this Facebook you speak of) Even Greggs do vegan!

I've seen "off topic - general" sections literally destroy communities. They are great for getting clicks and for advertising dollars, but for maintaining a functioning community they are a horror show (imagine how much "fun" it would have been over the last three years).

I really enjoy this place, probably my favourite place on the Internet, but I feel there is a line that needs to be redrawn here. I (and others) have shown it's not really completely unrelated, it's a genuine, deserving subject, it's not lowering the tone in any way.
It does make making the decision about joining the club easier, is conversation so tightly controlled at club events?

I (and others) have shown it's not really completely unrelated, it's a genuine, deserving subject, it's not lowering the tone in any way. It is about as related as "what music do you listen to in your car". Should we have threads on other deserving subjects like mental health? As I know there are people on here who have suffered with that. Or how about a thread on children and what to do with them in the summer holidays, a deserving subject as there are a lot of parents on here, not even completely unrelated as there are many family friendly car shows to go to. Or maybe one on child hood cancer? Can't say that is undeserving, and there are people on this forum who it has directly affected, it would be churlish to not include that as a subject surely? The line is the same as it has been for the entire existence of this forum, that is directly related to cool older cars. So no "music thread", but yes "music videos with old cars in". No "what do do with kids", but yes "good museums to visit" or "kid friendly car show". Now I'm sure you and others can find examples where this isn't the case and threads have been posted, if you could be so kind as to report those I can get them deleted or locked (as I did with the one Mercdan already reported), because we don't see everything that comes through this forum.

I think what most of us like about this forum is that it’s a friendly place where everyone gets along.
But I guess part of the reason that is the case is that we are all here for one reason, cool old cars. I understand that a lot of us feel this is a worthy cause, but where do you draw the line between this and any number of other causes etc. I mentioned that I’d been to a parade in my build thread, and at the NEC yesterday afternoon had a brief chat about it with the people on the RR stand..... so no it doesn’t mean that conversations are controlled or restricted, but threads are here for a lot of people to see, and also without the face to face interaction it is difficult to understand the other persons intent or true feelings anyway.
I guess ultimately, if this has been through before, and we all still really enjoy the forum, whether we agree or not, the forum is what it is because of those decisions
