so ive the b230 engine in my car, ive taken the head off to port it, and ive found the cam bearings scored, and the cam looks scrap to me now. cam was new when it was fitted, and the engine was totally rebuilt.
Now, when i was getting the car running, i had a few issues with the microsquirt. I didnt know it was massively overfueling the engine, and i found out i had about 1ltr of fuel in the oil at one point. I think when it went to the rolling road it may have had a little fuel in the oil too.
Could that have caused the cam damage? The only other thing i am thinking is when i was trying to get it running, the cam being new, maybe didnt have chance to bed it? arnt you meant to run them at 3k for 20 mins first?
ive not stripped the bottom end as yet, but i think itll be fine. I have pics of the cam 200 miles ago and i can see scoring on the pics, and the engine in total maybe has done 600-700 miles.
the is no signs in the head other that its been starved of oil, the tappets always sounded a little ratterly, but they are 100% fine.
I'm going to rebuild the engine, but i need to know first what the problem was, or any signs to look for...
thankyou

Yeah fuel in the oil could be a cause. Is there definitely oil getting to the head? Seen a few engines where people have fitted the wrong head gasket/upside down that's blocked the oil feed or a incompatible head (oil hole in a different place).

defo getting oil to the head, ive checked the head gasket and its all ok.
the bearings are part of the head on the engine, cams are matched to the head, they are scored, is there a way they can be sorted out?

Heads for those engines aren’t hard to find or that expensive, so if it’s still badly scored it may be easier to get hold of another.
The oil pump outlet seals can be bought new from Volvo still, worth replacing to make sure the oil pressure is as intended- do you have an oil pressure gauge connected?
Cheers

head has big valves in it and has been ported to suit, so there is a lot of time in doing a new head. but yes thanks
i took teh head to diesel craft today in widnes, caught them just in time before closing, and they said they can polish the bearings and itll be fine...
made up!
thanks for the help

Ah, not just a simple head swap then.
Definitely check/replace the oil pump seals before starting the engine again...

i think what has happened is, the camshaft has seized at some point, this i think was early on after its rebuild. then the bits have gone into the pump, scored the pump, but the engine has kept on running.
I'm going today to buy a second hand bottom end, ill take the pump out of that, and clean my motor out i think. mine has new rings in it, and all the bearings look ok.

Assuming you fitted the cam, did you use assembly lube? They do like a good break-in period, but the high rpm is only to help the lobes & shims, not the bearings as far as I know. The cam cap bolts have quite a low torque, but I'm sure you already knew that.
