I’ve been driving my Audi 80 recently and for no reason it just starts to slow then all the speeds comes at once. Sometimes it will slow to a stop completely.
I replaced a couple of rubber hoses and that seemed to alleviate the problem. However it’s come back.
Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong or what to look out for?

A few more details about the age and running gear might help.

It's really intermittent, which I don't understand either. I did 2 20 miles journeys last night. It did it for a couple of seconds on the the first trip, then at the last minute on the way home on the second trip.

How would I assess that?

When you say it "slows", is it road speed or engine speed that is slowing? Does the engine appear to lack power, or if you dip the clutch when it's slowing will the engine rev cleanly?

It’s weird. It will slow down and the revs will go down really low. So both I suppose.
I can then lower the clutch and bring it back a bit. Sometimes it will go back to normal or slow to a stop.

I’ve not checked that. How do I check that?

If it was the (brake) servo, the way to check it is to remove the vacuum hose from the servo and plug both open ports up. (ie a bolt down the hose end and some kind of improvised cap on the servo port).
If it's a servo issue the problem will not occur while driving like that. Be advised though the braking behaviour will change, with a much firmer pedal, so take it easy!
I had similar with a couple of servos in the past. The revs drop, the engine runs rough, can only go slow because the servo is leaking away vacuum. Hellish in slow moving traffic but can also slow the vehicle right down at speed too. If it's been doing it a while you might also find your brake fluid is lower than it usually is.

Which rubber hoses did you replace?
Are you sure it isnt a fuel supply blockage? I take it its fuel injection... could be a bit of grot in an injector?
The fact you say the power surges back doesnt sound like a servo problem as it would just recover, not surge (unless you are mashing the pedal to try and wake it up again)

Normally (insert caveat here) if it feels like someone’s replaced the throttle with a piece of knicker elastic, it’s fuel. If it’s like someone’s turned the key without you looking, it’s spark.
Causes for fuel (which is what it sounds like - but that includes air; basically the mixture goes to pot) are many and varied; blocked filter, sock floating in the tank, failing pump relay, duff pump, water in the tank, soggy air hose, split in air ducting, sticky pressure regulator valve, etc..

I replaced the fuel filter last night. Just went to take the car out and the fuel was leaking out. I did the bolts up as tight as they would go. I did put a bolt either side of the fuel pipe. Not sure if that was the right position.

So went back under the car tonight, tightened the bolts up super tight. Nearly gave myself a hernia.
Zero petrol curse word out - win!
But the lord giveth and the lorded taketh away. The exhaust has seen better and is next on the list.
I’ve been quoted £350 for a full exhaust by my local parts shop. However I’m tempted by the full exhaust from cat for £65 on eBay. What say you?
