The was working OK up until 30 minutes. I had driven how to walk my dog, did that, started driving back to work. I got 1/2 and it just wouldn't go over 3000rpm and became really sluggish and slow then stopped completely.
I managed to limp to a nearby car park. where it wouldn't really move or go over 1000rpm.

So if you dip the clutch, does it still not rev above 1000rpm in neatral? Does it idle ok?

Nope, it won't rev higher than 1000rpm, and the idle sounds shocking.
I have a video but I'm unaware of how to add it

I've also been on the classic audi forum and they suggested the relay 30

What's your rotor arm like? I had a weird issue on my Audi coupe years ago which turned out to be the rotor arm. It had a mechanical rev limiter (a sliding contact on a spring, above certain rpm it would slide and break the contact) and it was causing an intermittent short. Took ages to figure it out, it ended up in an Audi main agent to have a look, and a regional manager happened to notice it and ask what was up. He'd been a mechanic when they were current, and suggested the rotor arm might be at fault.

After work I got back to the car and was met by the aa man (who was awesome) he had a good look around the engine bay and checked the oil, which said was really low. I put about 1.2 litres of oil in and fired the car up. He followed me home and the car was fine.
I still have no idea what is causing these sudden random drops in power

I checked the relay and couldn’t see any obvious problems

Don’t certain VAG cars of that period have the oil pressure switch hooked into the ignition system? I vaguely recall someone had a malfunctioning oil pressure light and wierd things ensued. Might have been on a Mk2 Golf or a Polo but it’s a similar vintage..

Sorry to sound thick. Could you explain that in a bit more detail?

It’s a vague recollection of there being possibly two oil pressure switches - one activates the dash lamp and another one at a different pressure is a sort of protection (can’t recall if it affects the ignition or fuel).
VWs aren’t really my thing so it was something I read but didn’t fully retain..

So you’re saying that it’s a possibility that the low oil is causing the car to protect itself by controlling the revs?

Well this all makes sense. I bought 5 litres of oil and managed to get over 1 litre in it until it was up to the mark on the dip stick. Drove to work today, no smoke no problems.
I must have an oil leak somewhere. The underneath of the car is covered in oil so I will need to give it a clean and see where the oil is coming from.
I do need to find a reasonalby cheap exhaust as this one sounds terrible.

The first link I think I bought a complete system from them before - Absolutely fine - assemble / seal with RTV silicon and you will be fine

Does the car mostly do short journeys?
Mayo in breathers can be caused by short journeys not allowing the car to get up to temperature fully.

I took the air filter apart and there was a piece of plastic floating around loose in there. Not a great start. The more I took apart the more yellow sludge seemed to appear.
When I was pulling part of the air hose from the next joint, I thought it was a rubber hose that would bend. It wasn't and it didn't so now I'm on the hunt for a new Air intake vent hose.
I was having a conversation with my uncle last night, he's said that the short commute I do will cause moisture to develop as the engine isn't getting warm enough. He has also suggested fully synthetic oil as opposed to the semi synthetic 10w40 I've been using.
*Why is there so much oil in this system anyway? *Where is this moisture coming from? *Surely people have short commutes and don't have to deal with this problem regularly?

It’s the breather system - looks reasonably normal if it’s got some miles on it and never been apart, or not recently. 2. The outside air - it’s cold and damp this time of year. 3. Yes, they do - a good long run (20-30 miles) once a week normally keeps it at bay.
