Hi, my mate is looking for a classic to run as a daily. He's never worked on cars before but he looks after a lot of tractors and ride on mowers at work.
He's had a couple of 944s, mk1 and mk2 golfs in the past.
what cars would you recommend he consider that can be ran daily for his short commute. He has a sports bike so doesn't need performance, just reliability and something that he can maintain himself without super rare parts.

It will depend what he needs to do with it and his budget, but the easiest would be something well supported for parts and easy to fix like a minor, mgb, mini or beetle, or as above if he's loaded, a db5 and pay someone to do everything.

I'd say 60s British for simplicity and parts if he has somewhere undercover to store it or doesn't mind welding.
Start in the 1980s if not.

Not a bad idea. One of his exes used to have one which he used to drive. Sure the whole car only had 4 moving parts.

Surely it's all down to his personal taste. You could be given multiple choices over pages on this thread & not one excites him. The best option is to search ebay until something within his £6k budget gives him a little fizz inside & then view it 1st hand to see if he still feels it. Cars are a very personal thing & classis/retro even more so.

All good replies thanks.
He's quite impulsive so I'm hoping to offer him suggestions from those who have lived with specific classics and offer cars to aim for and avoid.
He's been keen on a Schimiter for the last 20 years.

Well, I've lived with a Minor for about six years now, it was my starter, and it's still my favourite (see thead in sig).
They rust but are cheap to repair. Only thing is you need to be putting a 5-speed or a taller diff plus some sound dampning pads in if you're doing a lot of miles. Similar story for MGBs and Triumphs without overdrives.
Rover P6 2000TC with a solid chassis would be great too. I had one of those for a while and it was more comfortable than a lot of moderns, the ride that suspension gives is marvel. Atrocious on fuel though and more expensive to maintain.

Decent starter classic? Loads! It depends on what he wants to do.
Off the top of my head:
-Mazda MX-5 NA -MG B & Midget -Triumph Spitfire -Mercedes W123 or W124 -BMW E21 or E30
I'd recommend Japanese and Ford stuff but parts for 80s Fords are now not great, and J stuff exaggerates that somewhat.
As an example I could find TREs for all of the above cars very easily from a number of websites. With my '77 Carina, I struggled like hell to find them, albeit I managed. I know Rich with his R30 Skyline has seen similar issues with his.
