Anybody had stuff chrome plated? I could do with getting my bumpers re-chromed but I have no idea what cost is involved. I'm going to try and get some quotes tomorrow but at least I will be prepared so that I don't faint if its mega bucks. To keep it on topic, here s a pic of the car in question, Dave.

Chroming is mega bucks. To do a bumper can cost anything from £200 to £500.

For it to be done properly it will be expensive.
The cost is not so much for the actual plating but for the prep work making the metal perfect and polished so well that it already looks plated.

Probably cheaper to buy a new one.
Are they the same as Beetle bumpers?

problem is finding someone with a big enough tank to take the bumper - not many people have anything big enough.

The company I used to do all of the suspension and steering plating on my old buggy are superb and they specialise in car and bike parts no matter how small the bits are.
The only problem is that they are down here in Northampton and I see from you sig that you're in Glasgow.
If you fancy couriering the bumpers down, they can be found at...
Northampton & Midland Plating 6 Connaught St, Northampton 01604 631372 or 01604 637038
They do a superb job. All of the chrome on every moving part on the chassis of my buggy was as good as the day they did it when I sold the car 11 years on (see 'If it were ever for sale I'd buy it' thread)

Off topic aside - did you know that it's illegal to chrome suspension parts in Australia? That was from an Oz hot rod forum, but I can't find the link just now. Apparently it can weaken the underlying metal

i say you electro polish it, takes away a microscopic layer of metal and leaves the shiney surface, with no effects to dimensions or properties etc, looks very nice aswell, we are going to be doing it on the exhausts we make

I will get the quote of the company that did my dads bumpers on his scimitar - we couldnt find any good scimitar ones so we did what they did in the factory; got a ford corsair one, had it striped, then cut a bit out the middle and welded it back togehter to make it narrower! we then ground and polished it up before sending it away to be plated, it looks supurb! I say you electro polish it, takes away a microscopic layer of metal and leaves the shiney surface, with no effects to dimensions or properties etc, looks very nice aswell, we are going to be doing it on the exhausts we make then what? how do you stop it rusting? I assume you exhausts that you make are good quality stainless, with mild steel it wouldnt it be a waste of time?

clear lacquer it i reckon
yeah the exhausts we make are stainless, it helps its corrosion properties doin this, not sure how it would work with mild, don't know enough about it, would have to ask one of the companies.
try anopol, they are pretty good for this stuff

Apparently it can weaken the underlying metal Interesting! I must admit to having no problems with the buggy and that saw an average of 5000 miles a year, was used to tow a camping trailer to VW shows and was thrashed up the strip many times when it had it's 1776cc and then 2276cc engines. As I was constantly polishing it I would have found any problems. I guess it's different in a 2 tonne V8 monster!
