Could you get one of those clear resin kits and drop it in there, and make a round knob so you don't rip the palm of your hand to pieces?

Resin kit is a great idea, or get it plated somehow, maybe PVD? Or Ceracoat?

I’d have thought a quick spray with some clear lacquer would do the job? It’s know bare steel parts clear coated can still have issues with rust creeping below the lacquer, but normally that’s on parts exposed to proper weather, rather than just a bit of damp inside the car.

Good shout on the resin idea. I'll look into it.
Luckily I was able to use the CROWN wheel to sculpt the pinion with such precision that it fits the contours if my hand. All planned...
I'm not sure on the lacquer idea or plastidip. I handle my knob quite a lot, even keeping hold of it next to red lights. I know, bad habit. So I'm worried I'll wear it too much and sweaty palms will cause it to discolour.

Your skin is slightly acidic which won't help rusting of bare metal. Love the idea though Clear resin would be a good bet though. I'd recommend Envirotex Lite, which is a little on the pricier side but is really a very good product. Started off with eBay specials which were very hit and miss as to whether they cured properly, regardless of how well they were mixed. Finally shelled out for some proper stuff and it works every time I use it. If you want a really stunning piece you can cast slightly oversize and have it turned down by someone with a woodworking lathe. Works really nicely for resin

The resin would hopefully go some way to keeping the knob warm in the winter and cooler in the summer? Summer especially, given the pointy nature of it!
According to one of my friends from school, Brut 33 is not good for looking after your knob!

Edit: looks like you already have a different diff! Have you managed to break an R160?! Nah... that’s a later Triumph diff. Fine splines go with the collapsible spacers. I’m not sad enough to figure out the ratio from the wreckage. Convincing job though. I’ve only ever broken carriers and cross-pins. Nick

I think I’d cast a resin cylinder around the remains and stick it in the lathe to turn something knob-like from it. You’ve got a choice of colours, opacity or even add some glow powder to it.
Or just have it clear.......

Nick Ah gotcha, I was thrown off by the picture with the bolt-on leaf spring mount! Must be te replacement... I forget, is it the earlier type with the fatter bearings or the later type with the bigger, thinner bearings that's the stronger one? Mine's a quaifed early type and I can't remember if that was the stronger one or not. I've got a 3.67 from a 1500 to swap the LSD into if necessary, but not sure what was the best option...

Well, I do see what you mean, but I was going by the relatively short pinion length as the R160 has a really long nose and presumably has a pinion about 12” long.
Plus that looks just like the Triumph one I have under my bench - except mine still has teeth!
Hopefully Pete will be along to enlighten us.....

It's from a 3.63, which replaced the 4.11 I killed. The 4.11 died at 20mph in second gear but survived the drag strip, hill climbs and autosolo's. I guess it got weakened... The 3.63 went as I pulled into a road next to mine and floored it. It had the same treatment as the last. Ironically, it died on the way to meet my co-driver and prepare for the Round Britain Reliability Run. The 3.63 in it now has been used just as much as the others so is on borrowed time. I never accelerate hard in 1st and go easy in 2nd. Well, apart from that one time... Although what's in it now did spend a day lighting up a rear tyre (not tyres) in 2nd at an autosolo last year. The R160 you see hasn't gotten any further than making the spring support and rear bush plate. I might start on the rest this week. Then figure out driveshafts. I didn't want to use paint as it'd hide its prettiness and I thought lacquer would rub off clean metal. But, I've decided to try etching it in coffee and using lacquer. We'll see how it lasts! I present to you, my shiny knob I've been playing with today.

Yes, but only to stop your hands from getting dirty from the rest of the car.
My knob feels fine when de-gloved.
