Hi all After a safe car for my ( soon to be ) 17 year old to learn in and own. Will be spending a grand or so on it. Needs to be low tax, low cc and above all safe. When he passes ( hopefully! ) He will use it to go 20 motorway miles to collage. I'm guessing a Toyota aygro type thing, but it was down graded to a 3 on the ncap safety rating. Should I be worried by this, am I over thinking ? I'd prefer a physically bigger car to be honest. Any thoughts or advice much welcome. Thank you

I've just got a Toyota IQ for my 17 year old daughter. Insurance for me is ridiculously cheap and I've run some quotes for my daughter and they are coming in well within the price I was expecting. NCAP ratings for occupants are 5 star linkIt's not bad to drive, obviously not much power but that's fine for learning and getting the knowledge of driving in traffic etc. 3 cylinder, 998 cc (1KR-FE) 68 PS (50 kW; 67 hp) at 6,000 98 N⋅m (72 lbf⋅ft) at 4,800 Parts seem cheap and should be pretty reliable with it being a Toyota. Cheers AL.

Thanks Al. I've just googled a pic, don't think I've ever seen one before. not sure if he will fit in it though, as he's 6ft already. I should have mentioned that he will be moving his drum kit about in it too, so it might be a tad small!

I had a first gen Aygo for a while when I was trying to have a cheaper daily for a bit, it was ok as far as a cheap city car goes. I did a couple longer journeys in it and my back did not thank me but use them as intended and they're fine 🙂
I never had a drum kit in it, but a set of 17" wheels with tyres fitted went in with the seats down!
With regards to the NCAP rating being amended, it might be worth seeing if there are specific reasons as to why it has been lowered. I think some of the reasons that older modern cars are having their rating dropped is because they don't have the auto braking, lane departure warning or other systems of later cars, rather than the actual body of the car being much worse (although of course advancements have been made in that area also).
A car I used when I first passed was a Fiat Grande Punto (another car that's had its ncap rating lowered of late). I never had any major issues with it, there always seem to be loads about for cheap and they are a little bit bigger than some of their original competitors which could be handy from a practicality/safety point of view.

How about a fiesta with the smaller 1.25 or 1.4 petrol engine? What is the insurance like on those for that age.
I have one and its a good solid little car with plenty of room inside and can be picked up fairly cheap, also very easy to maintain and repair and parts are cheap.

Before you buy anything, run a quote through on anything on webuyanycar & save it. Make changes, like drivers, black box etc & see if it drops.
Then find a list of car's, and change the reg numbers on the quotes - takes about 1min to get a fresh quote on a different car.
Some things are way more expensive than others, power & size don't always make a difference!
I think one of the cheapest was the VW Up on the last one of these types of threads.
It may turn out to be cheaper to buy a more expensive car & save on insurance

Not in keeping with RR, but we got our lad a new VW polo on PCP.
Worked out £1800 a year, saved almost £1000 a year each year on insurance compared to older vehicles, no tax, no mot, and me not having to worry about him/the car as I am mechanically inept, sold it at the end of the deal paid of the PCP and still had a few quid left.
I feel it worked for us, but YMMV, but it's worth looking into.
I was shocked at the difference in insurance (had to have a black box fitted) his first year was £800 as opposed to anything else which was getting quoted 1800+

Generally the more popular the vehicle the dearer the insurance - risk increases with volume.

Hi thanks for all your advice so far, I'll do some research re different quotes, good idea. Looked for vw ups and the cheapest was over budget, fiesta is a good idea. I've heard lots of good things about a Suzuki swift but they are 1.3 or 1.5 so might be to much to insure

Try a fiat panda good wee cars and was cheap for insurance for my daughter's first car Great load haulers with the rear seats down/taken out. I picked one up as a stop gap, 6 years and 135k miles later I still have it, its great fun. If you get a 1.3MJ it has a surprising turn of pace as well, but may not be as insurance friendly.

Don't discount some larger 'non traditional first vehicle' cars, small popular cars get crashed and so get a poor reputation.
Yes, slightly more to run but the lower insurance should offset that.

My two started in Kia Picantos - cheapest I could find to insure after literally hundreds of quotes. Anything popular like a Polo, Fiesta, Corsa, Ibiza are twice as much as unpopular stuff old giffas drive. They are quite rugged too the last one lasted 200,000 hard miles on the original 1.0 engine and box.
My youngest has now turned 18 and wanted something bigger for van life I was quite surprised how cheap passenger versions of car derived vans are to insure. Even the 2.0 diesels. He now has a Renault Kangoo 4x4 with 95Bhp 1.6 engine for same price insurance as the 53bhp Kia and is having the time of his life touring the Outer Hebrides sleeping in the back as we speak.
*Edit my daughter had an accident in her Picanto with a Focus and it stood up well (better than I expected) and saw the road again.

Monthly PCP, MPG, and insurance made it proper cheap when I had mine. Mostly driven by OAPs so crash percentage low. I've got some coilovers in the loft if you want to make it look more street cred. Only catch is newer ones (2020+) are hybrid only I believe so not quite as good MPG wise as the pure petrol!

Thank you A lot of the above replies seem to be going down the long term/PCP route but I read your post as you wanted to spend £1k in total? If so, you won't get much for £1k in the current market. Even 15 year old povvo spec Citroen C1s or Fiestas are up for way more than that in this part of the world (South East) and most will need a reasonable amount of remedial work to get them 100%. An Aygo is just a C1 anyway with a badge premium for no good reason.

Have a look at the Honda Jazz I'd second that, my daughters other half looked at them when he first passed, insurance was dirt cheap and a pleanty of well looked after ones driven by older people out there.
