Hi guys and gals. If you had a lowly old early RWD Toyota and wanted to give it some sparkle, what Toyota twin-cam carburettored engine with 5 speed box would you put in it which is still reasonably readily available?
Not knowing my Toyotas all that well, I'd be thinking of buying a running rot box and scavenging for parts and dumping the rest. What would be my donor car? 1600cc - 2000cc without scrapping an important model. Does such a thing exist?
Cheers

You can get a 2T-G (1600cc DOHC 8V with twin solex-mikuni carbs) or an 18R-G (2000cc DOHC 8V with twin solex-mikuni carbs). Both very rare (and cost loads to refurb/service because parts are getting rare). You can get an 4A-GE (1600cc DOHC 16V) fairly easy, but since it's fuel injected, you have to change to injection or fit carbs to it Enginewise it's the best choice, reliable, cheap(ish) and lots of parts and tuningparts available.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have a Corona RT40 you see, or will have shortly and will probably want more oomph and stoppage. What cars should I look for for those engines and some disc brakes?

i have just bought a 4age from ebay, it was £100 from a mr2, with the box, althogh no use to me!
Now, with a little bit of farting about, i am going to fit it to a type 9 sierra 5 speed, although, i would if a road car use a toyota box.
I'm going to use the tvis injection, although for you there is no reason why you would not use bike carbs, better than webbers or delortoes...
cheep chearful you wont regret it!

RT40... then i'd be looking for an 18R-G, will probably slide on you own enginemounts (and search for the matching P51 5 speed gearbox). Found in Celica RA28 GT (ST had the normal 18R, which isn't bad either) and Celica RA40 GT. any pics of your Corona? ;D I can't give any advise about brakes, i don't know what suspension/brakes those Coronas use.

You've probably seen it quite recently. Collecting on Saturday Would it be criminal to buy a rotten Celica GT for spares and scrap the remains? Ferg

I know its a RT51 but the theory is the same. This one is the 'Silver Top' 20v 4A-GE with the factory quad throttle bodies on display. Let me know if you want a PDF of the whole article.

I've got a spare 3S-GE 2000 twincam from a fwd celica, I've seen a few converted to RWD then all you need is a set of bikecarbs and megasquirt for the dizzy £50.00 for the engine
