Has it ever had the valve clearances adjusted?
They used to be a bit of a faff to do, due to the scheme of adjusting them I seem to remember 🤪

fair chance an exhaust leak there will make it play up but I would have though it would thrown an antipollution fault as they have pre and post cat lambda, though it would be reading cleaner than it should be post cat rather than a cat failing.

Haha, I can't say they've been done specifically but I would have hoped any adjustment would have been done when the head was off for the head gasket change last year fair chance an exhaust leak there will make it play up but I would have though it would thrown an antipollution fault as they have pre and post cat lambda, though it would be reading cleaner than it should be post cat rather than a cat failing. Yeah it was certainly starting to get louder just before we got the exhaust fixed so must have been a fairly decent leak. Driving it down to the Weekender yesterday, did notice that sometimes when idling it stumbles a little, I assume when the fan kicks in as we were running the air con. So I might still have some work to do around the throttle body

Haha certainly, managed to avoid it by taking a detour to the South of Oxford, passing the MINI factory, ended up on some odd small roads before joining the M40 but kept moving which I much prefer to sitting in gridlock!

You got luckier than us then! Google Maps was flirting with taking us off the A4114, and then going back to the A34. We had to come off, as we needed a wee stop. We got stuck in a random village, which had all of Oxford's pubs within it, it seemed, and then went past North Oxford BMW, before getting back onto a clear A34. The southbound junction being shut didn't help matters.
