Hey Folks! Another week, another weekly chat, your place for stuff that may not warrant a full thread or stuff that is just going on right now that you want to share. Urgh! ... that's what I say, I say Urgh! This problem with the forum is dragggggging on. The feedback I have is that they have identified the problem from the network traffic recording that I sent, but seeing as we're still in the midst of it all I'm going to assume they don't have a solution. This has also paused some more of my development effort on the forum as testing stuff was problematic and I didn't know if this was the forum we'd be using in a months time. Other than that I've taken the chance to upload a couple of galleries on to Flickr, now that I have managed to get access again: flickr.com/photos/retroscenemag/ and I'll be doing a bunch more. Also in the planning stages for what events I'll be at in 2024, got three international ones on my calendar and one Retro Rides 20th Birthday celebration ... hopefully there is a strong positive karmic backswing from this end of year rubbishness and 2024 turns out to be great. In the mean time, I'm nursing a cold (boo) and a hope in my heart that we'll have normal service resumed soon (yay)! Got a new set of front shocks made for my pickup . From a company called Protech , I can’t recommend them enough !! www.protechshocks.co.uk/Slightly shorter . This resulted in a more acceptable ride height . Still away to go , but it’s good progress considering the time of year . 👍

How is all this twenty years old!? Where has the time gone! Not much car stuff going on, although I went out for a quick spin with my mate in his Alfa 75 a few days ago. Twin Spark, goes well!

Got a few days off as I've been slack in using my holiday this year, have mostly been trying to get the Kawasaki finished, engine is now in so that's a big step forward Crossfire still needs welding when the weather plays ball, and I've started a "to do" list for the MGB, I needed a rather larger piece of cardboard than the one I used for the Crossfire...

Stripping the engine down from the Dodge Dart... expected a rebuild, but not quite this encrusted mess Windscreen for the same, hideously expensive but not urgent so that's next year to worry about. Gremlin went through DVLA last Thursday, no issues from the inspector(on site all of 10 minutes...) so let's see how long it takes to get documents through now. However have seen a cool old dirt track racer on line...

Got the wife’s Nissan Murano fixed and working this past weekend. Was stymied by an awkward to access nut that was in danger of rounding off. Some 6-point impact sockets and the longest 3/8 breaker bar that Harbor Freight sold got that nut off first try. So drain the coolant and pull out all the parts (undertray, top cover, intake duct, battery, battery tray, belt tensioner, fans and radiator) to gain access. Only, to be able to really reach the through bolt that holds the alt on you need to remove the front catalyst heat shield. And one bolt cannot be reached with the cat on the car… Nissan engineers… really fellas? But some careful fingertip wiggling and the bolt is out, quickly followed by the offending part… Can you tell new from old? I had a pretty major oil leak from the plastic front bank cam cover, since replaced (because you can’t get the plug tube seals for the VQ35DE as parts and they’re use once items, so new cover it is) so I’m guessing oil plus dirt equals dead alternator. As the Haynes BoL would say, reinstallation is the reverse of removal, except limited access meant getting the bolts in was a fiddly working-blind job. But it’s back in, hooked up, reinstalled all the parts, filled the cooling system and I fired it up, and… A solid 14.4 volts at idle with the lights and rear defrost on. So that’s a win. Took it up the street a bit and it drives and shifts just fine. And it only cost me $20,600 - $25 for the tools, $75 for the alternator off eBay (compared to $250 at local parts stores). And $20,500 for a 2018 Kia Niro hybrid for the wife. We’d been considering trading the Murano in for something newer that gets better fuel economy. The Murano could get, if you’re light on the throttle, 18mpg (US) in town and maybe 20mpg on the highway, all while sucking down premium unleaded. Three and a half liters of 24 valve V6 power dragging around almost two tons with the aerodynamics of a shed through an inefficient CVT does not good efficiency make. The wife took the new beastie on a quick trip, about 100 miles mix of highway and town driving, and came back with the trip computer reporting 49mpg. But she’s happy, so I’m happy. Even if the piggy bank is feeling somewhat deflated. So now she’s happy with her new chariot, time for some changes on my truck… And the final, sad, humiliation for the Murano? The appraiser at the dealer came back with the trade in offer. And the drivers outside door handle. When he opened the door to drive it, the handle came off in his hand. Chrome plated plastic, and it looks like it fractured where the actuator cable connected. A $150 part, no longer available from Nissan.

The house move looms ever closer and I've come to the unhappy conclusion that I'm mostly just going to have to tinker with the Princess and not get into the bigger jobs I'd like to have finished before the move. Time of year is what's against me, I've lost about a month because of a combination of the weather and general house move stress putting me in the wrong head space when the weather has been clear. Best not to go opening cans of worms by mucking up important jobs and disabling the car by accident when there's only about 10 weeks until I'm moving house. That doesn't stop me doing less important things like ordering parts from abroad. Mirrors from Thailand, which arrived stupendously quickly and I was astonished I could find an exact replacement of since the originals I bought a good ten years ago and couldn't remember exactly what they were listed as. A search for "Datsun wing mirror" was all I needed to do on eBay. The rear lights were a bit trickier. One lens has randomly cracked and while '64 Galaxie rear lights are plentiful in their home territory they're not so much here in the UK. Fortunately an acquaintance could step in and get a set posted out to me, which is good because most US sellers of the type I was after either wouldn't post internationally or at all. Sorting out these types of self inflicted challenges is all part of the fun, or so I'm told.

Slowly reversing the previous owners attempt at sorting the wiring, to be honest it is quite enjoyable. At least now it will crank on the key...

Hey DarrenW have you got that photo in a higher resolution? I've checked your galleries online and it is one of the few pictures missing from the Retro Cars Show 2004 selection.

The Morris had some work done, I updated the "build" thread, but its not a lot, but its improving the car all along. Working out what I do next on this one. Nice to have it back and in use I also got the Humber back from the paint place Very pleased how that has turned out. I've been driving the Majestic a bit Waiting for service items etc to arrive for that one. Had some paint done on the Rover to deal with where the paint was lifting on the aluminum panels The match is better on the boot than the bonnet, but its probably good enough. TBH, I haven't bonded with the Rover and will likely be selling it in the new year.

Not done much car stuff really, been in quite a good Christmas mood so done lots of that sort of stuff. What has really made my day is a post on a Facebook page about this:- Back as a young teenager going to the Leeds Cruise (probably late 90s/early 2000s) a guy called Geoff used to turn up with his elderly dad in this, a K10 Micra with the complete running gear from a Nissan Cherry Turbo transplanted in. It was in full sleeper mode, complete with tartan rug etc, and one of my favourite cars of all time apart from......I wasn't sure if it actually existed. I thought I had posted photos of it on the cruise reports I did on the old uk-hotrods website, but all the links were dead and I couldn't find any photos on old computers. I really didn't question it's existence until today, when a guy posted photos of it on Facebook after he's fully restored it, with details of the above in the post. Still one of my favourite cars ever.

Been moving this last week. Not ideal at this time of year, not even got a tree up yet!! The mondeo has more than earned its keep though hauling household, garage and garden (council slabs, concrete Tiki statues and planters) plus a scrap run.
