Apologies if this has been on here before, but I don't recall seeing it. 'Gunter Artz in Hanover split a Golf body-shell and widened it to cover Porsche 928 mechanicals. Only the doors and side panels are original, everything else had to be fabricated. The windscreen alone cost £2,000 so this was not a cheap exercise. This 300bhp RWD Golf Mk1 was featured in many magazines of the early 1980s, not least because it could achieve awesome four wheel drifts and crack a genuine 140mph. Road tests of the time suggested it was terrible to drive.' I think 6 were made in total as a promotional tool. And a video of one:

I remember that from 'Motor' (I think)... IIRC it was reconed to be faster than a 928, due to the fact the Golf had better aerodynamics than the Porsche...
|
|
... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

Kinda weird looking thing, all the proportions are wrong compared to a normal Mk1 ;D Very cool but I'll always prefer the Sbarro Golf with the Porsche Turbo lump in the back and the hinged floorpan ;D

They did something similar with a Mk2 Astra/Kadett and a Chevrolet Corvette too ;D

Sweet baby Jesus. Reminds me of the Racing Dynamics K55 - Take a 3 series compact. Keep it looking fairly standard... Then slip the V12 from the 850 into it. Mad as a bag of cats.

Just think though, we have 'normal' Mk1's these days running 1.8T and R32 lumps with better figures than that for a fraction of the cost. Makes you realise how much technology has advanced.

odin in da house: VW Golf Bodied Porsche 928
I remeber back in the 80's living in LA there was a show at Beverly Hills VW of cars built by a German tuner called B&B Busch-something & Beer-something, the cars were only available in 3 or 4 pastell (Miami Vice) colours, the whole car inside & out was in the same colour and they had real cool rims with the b&b logo. They also had a Golf 928 on display and was said to go into production but what I remeber I only saw a couple of the B&B Golf & Covertibles rolling around Beverly Hills then all of a sudden they were just gone, one of those in pale mauve would probably stand out at E38 2008.....

I used to have a set of top trumps in the late `80s, and the Opel Omega (Carlton) was listed as being 17,000 ft wide. I always assumed it was some sort of misprint, but I`m not sure now, perhaps it was a continuation of this.
These are great, by the way, pepperami wide-boy versions of the Mk1 Golf and Mk2 Astra, and the Golf on Teledials. Fantastic.

YES THAT'S THE CARS!!!!!
What a flashback and I specaially remeber the brownish converible (2'nd in the lineup) with a faux aligator top!!!!! And those are the rims all the US cars were fitted with, non of that BBS stuff in Beverly Hills or South Beach....
DP says: Hey Darren I just wish there were one for us each.....
