They changed to a remote gearchange instead of the column shift as well I also believe (if Wikipedia is owt to go by) the A35 was so called 'cause of its massive hike in hp to 34bhp! Forgot that one. A30's weren't column change but had the leaver coming right out of the top of the box up towards the front of the floor. The A35 gear box had an extension to bring the base of the lever further back. Useless fact of the day. All Austin "A" numbers refer vaguely to the quoted bhp of the car. That's why there are similar bodied cars with different A's and thinks like A55 Mk1's and A55 Mk2's

Really interesting trivia 2002gimp & Seth Often got muddled up as the Farina is an A35 - I presumed the older bubble shapped cars were A30s & the newer shaped car A35s, didn't realise the number dictated engine output Now its all clear(er) & I can show off my new found knowledge the next time I go to a country fair/classic car show That means that when you fit a bigger more powerfull engine you'd have to change the cars name ....... A120 FTW ;D

If you want to go big budget you can pop the MG Metro Turbo setup on which can run upto 150bhp pretty easily. Same problems, I imagine - FWD to RWD. All possible, natch, but not in any way bolt on. Not true fella. The turbo setup is all in the head, manifolds and carbs, you'd need to lower compression with either a plate or head work to run low boost. If you want to run high boost you'd need to change the pistons and probably the rods to but it'll bolt on any A series no matter where the gearbox attachs. A mate of mine has an MG turbo set up that he's hoping to pop on his Midget at somepoint in the future. Nick

If staying with the A series go for the Ital A+ 1275 plus a Shorrock supercharger as fitted to Sprites etc. You can fit a Sierra 5 speed using an adapter too. Spridget front suspension and brakes bolt straight on.

Am I right in thinking that the 803cc had white metal bearings and so it's a fan of long periods of thrashing? Or did I make the mistake of believing possibly the most boring Moggy owner that I've ever met?

It has white metal bearings, no cam bearings at all, has the smallest bore of ANY A series, and is hopelessly fragile. White metal bearings are not a good thing.

Indeed - 803 = boat anchor 948s are nice, especially the Sprite Mk2 spec units, as these have proper cam bearings, double valve springs etc already fitted

Very late in the day, but I have just read this thread.
I know of only two turbocharged A35,s, one of which is mine.
I have around 140bhp and get up to 40 mpg. It does 15.9/91mph and is totally reliable (after a year or two of development)
The worst aspect is the steering, but converting to rack and pinion is not a process for the amateur -ask me how I know.
Still lots of fun though !
