I reckon the fuel costs alone costs me around 22p/mile to tow a vehicle. This is based on 20mpg which most of the diesel vehicles I have used average (transits, discovery`s, troopers, pajero`s etc..)
Thats if its mainly motorway and A roads.
If there is a lot of B roads and hills involved this will drop to around 17mpg which works out as 26p/mile.
Once you look into the running costs, insurance, depreciation and wages, the £1 a mile (both ways)most people on ebay charge doesnt work out too bad.
On long runs I often use transport companies to collect cars as the cost spent on that compared with how much I could have made working or getting things done at home normally works out money well spent.
The companies I have used in the past have actually worked out at around 80p/mile and there is one company up here (Beamish Transport) that can work out as low as 60p/mile but they are not always convenient as they fit your collections in with other ones that they make.
They brought a mates range rover from the centre of London up here for £200
