How to post pics: A simple guide

Step 1: Hosting your pictures

First you need to host pics, or have them online already. Hosting your own pics can be done at a number of sites.

I use www.photobucket.com

There are some restrictions on storage qty and bandwidth use but it’s never been a problem to me and a gig of storage is a lot of pictures - photo's for forum use want to be around 300mb or less

When I wrote this guide I intended it to be a general how to rather than a specific guide for photobucket but the priciples are the same for most and if you have problems just shout on the forum and someone will be able to help

The following is a list of other possible hosts and can be quite useful but I only have a very small amount of experience using the alternatives listed below:

Free ones (may have limited facilities)

www.flickr.com

www.tinypic.com

www.fototime.com

Subscription required

www.photobucket.com


So the first step is to join Photobucket or similar

Once joined and logged in – either create an album if you like to keep photos of different cars or events separate or have a nice big simple bucket



Right now you can add pictures



Select directory
Select the image you want to upload from your PC Folder



If it’s just one image

click on the upload button and let it do it's stuff

or keep adding images until you reach the limit of 20 then click upload



Depending on number of images you will soon get confirmation of upload



One note of caution is that photobucket can do bulk uploads of much larger numbers than 20 – ie a complete folder of pics but I’ve had issues with this process (might just be me tho!!!)

When it's completed you will have a thumbnail to pic (or if you’ve loaded several images a page full of thumbnails



Anyway back to linking to the pictures now hosted

Step 2: Inserting pics into your post

Click on the bottom section for forum links and the properties in the box will be automatically copied.



Finally, go back to the forum and in a reply to a post or a new thread put the image properties in the post where you want the picture to be either by using CTRL + V or right-click, paste.

It should look like this:

And will result in this:

Do you start the next image on a new paragraph? Like this...
[ img]xxxxxxx[/img]

[ img]xxxxxxx[/img]

If you do them on the same line like this...
[ img]xxxxxxx[/img] [ img]xxxxxxx[/img]

...it'll put them horizontally and not vertically. I think.

Might be a bandwidth thing,.. some photo hosting only allows a certain number of views.

Can I recommend www.tinypic.com it's quick, easy and there's no registration/account malarkey either.

Do remember that some boards (including this one) need an image to have a jpg or gif suffix on the image name - in which case just add jpg in the title field when you upload.

Photobucket seems effective also. Putfile is absolutely hopeless on the other hand!

There's another reason for not posting huge pictures - the resolution of most screens won't cope with it.
Photobucket is a bit more straightforward to use than Photobox I reckon.

how do i re-size my pictures? i find that some i have posted
are HUGE. i posted some of my car and they were fine but have just posted some in my for sale thread and they have come out massive.

OK they are a smidge big but not massive

I'd open the original images in MS Paint as it's on most PC's

then resize using the

Select Image at the top
Select Stretch/Skew
Replace the 100% with 50%
And the photo will be half the size

Rename it when you save it so you don't lose the original image

Upload those re-sized images to photobucket and link to them

if you want a clickable picture, you need to host 2 files, the big version and the smaller version.

then you fill in this:

Resizing and the clickable thumbnail code can both be done in photobucket. You can resize the image so it's that size everywhere you post it, or choose a size in the clickable thumbnail code generator, and the original won't change. To get the thumbnail code, check the box under the album thumbnail, then scroll to the bottom and click on 'Generate HTML codes'. That will give you a number of codes to copy and paste, with a brief description.

you mean upload it to the forum server - makes a little thumbnail to click on in your post - no not here
