We had no problems with my other halfs Zafira i actually quite liked it. It handled well for a mini bus ;D It wasent that slow but it was the 1.8.
I would go for the Octavia aswell Skoda jokes are dead and buried now. Not that should have excisted in the first place.

True that, even if Skoda jokes were unfair and unjustified libel even when they were current, these days they simply don't exist in any more than isolated pockets (mainly pub bores and w*nkers who know very little about cars but think they do still make skoda jokes) and they were never an indication of Skodas car making abilities even when they were current news. Maybe I'm just put off Vauxhalls by the fact that the Motability-loaned Zafira I've got experience of is horribly gutless (a base model 1600cc model), hopelessly unreliable (the clutch has caused breakdowns and the like more than a few times, usually in very uncomfortable places to have a breakdown, I recently towed it away from a very busy roundabout in a Volvo 940 when it broke down completely in during rush-hour and almost caused a good number of accidents! ) and hoplessly dull to make matters worse! ;D ;D

I don't know if it's better where you live but round here a car like a Passat 4Motion or Alfa 156 is asking to be keyed all over, have it's stereo and/or wheels nicked in the supermarket car park, and cost the earth to insure, whearas the Octavia is a good car that doesn't get a great deal of undesirable attention. Well, we live in the cotswolds so really anything other than a Discovery or range Rover is just not fitting in. Down here they'd key a Skoda (or report you to the police for being a traveller (obvioulsy)!! Mrs Z now quite likes the smaller volvo estate (s series?) I think that they are completely characterless, and probably slow too.

Skodas (as I recall) are just like re engineered VW's but with better spec and without the stupid price tag. or is that no longer the case? In the same vein, you could suggest getting one of the more sporty Seat offerings. Basically re worked VW's. Do they do a Cupra R estate? Mmmmmmm

anyone who ever said those skoda jokes were just being a curse word. in 1989 you could have rapid for less than a renault 5 or fiat panda and a rapid is bigger, faster, better to drive. oh that needs jokes clearly! would be like making jokes about TVRs coz they are so cheap!! I mean, who won the RAC LOMBARD RALLY 17 years in sucession? ERM SKODA! sorry, rant over! obviousily, i'd recomend an Octavia, just looked on the Bay and there isn't a wagon on atm, but... cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=18275&item=4538187181&rd=1However, just thinking, now isn't the time to buy a vRS estate as they have axed the old shape octavia and brought in the new one. but there isn't a vRS version of the new octavia yet, so if you wanted to buy a vRS estate it would have to be second hand... having said that, i looked at one in september, that was less than a year old for 11k!

One of those passat W8’s man, I am rubbing my hands at the prices of those bad boys. Imagine if you had bought one new, fugg me the depreciation would bankrupt you! They must lose something like 500 quid per week!!!! Still, their loss is your gain. I cant think of a cooler modern smoker than one of those.

The older spec Octavia's are still available in the showrooms, there are still quite a few in the import yard at Immingham. The vRS models are continuing for a while yet, until they decide whether to produce a 2005 spec model. Personally, if I had the finances to buy one, I would go for the vRS Estate (in yellow), if I remember correct they have the biggest load capacity in their class, the boot is HUGE. As far as i'm aware they can have a quick (and cheap) power upgrade by fitting the 225bhp Audi TT chip (and the vRS is quicker and handles better). The build quality is far superior than anything else in the VW group. In fact...when Skoda unveiled their Skoda Tudor concept, who nicked the design? BLOODY BENTLEY (the Skoda looks better) Skoda Tudor Bentley Continental GT a mate of mine was going to buy the Bentley until I told him it was a restyled Skoda (TO553R)

I've been driving my Mums Audi A3 this week, she is on holiday and so lent it to me. ;D
It the 2.0 TDi and is one of the best cars I've ever driven. It's so torquey and is perfectly balanced, you cant spin the wheels in 3rd in the dry!
The only fault I can find are the steering is a little light for me, butr its the same with all Audis I find; the ride is also a little fidgety at speed but I could live with that. I think I might keep it ;D
Its the 3dr but the 5dr has just come out if you are looking for something a bit bigger.
My Dad has the new A4 Estate with the same engine and it is just as good just not quite as quick through the corners.

I have tried to explain the concept of zero depreciation to Mrs Z but for some (female) reason the idea doesn't stick. All she sees is "old car" I might try to sneak a drive in one into the testing progamme, maybe, just maybe...

Don't even bother with the old Volvo V40 and S40 series, not good cars at all, but the new S40 and S50 aren't the worst choice you could make, they are characterless and not half the car the old rear drivers were, but there aren't many modern motors that are half as good as a Volvo 740. Plus supposedly the new S50 is an alright little car really, and you can have it with the legendary T5 (turbocharged, in-line 5 cylinder engine, not unlike the legendary Audi Quattro Coupe's) engine, which is always a plus point.

Whisper it quietly but I have shoved a couple of RS2's under Mrs Z's nose and she hasn't said no. In fact she's said if I can find one we can go and look at it!!!!!!! So any leads on one, put em up (must be RHD though!)
So now the RS2 is in pole position with the SAAB 2nd!
It may not be too old but I think it gets honourary retro status don't you think.

104 - if you manage to pull this off and end up with an RS2 you deserve to be knighted, not that prat Oliver!!
Someone mentioned before an Audi S4 - not so expensive as the RS4 but still pretty quick. I would love an M5 Touring but they are left hookers only too.

Mmmmmmm Full specs and differences between VAG 1.8T engine: www.daniil.dds.nl/skoda/vag-1.8t-engines.htmlObviously I'd go for the Saab HOT if I had the cash but having driven my father's Octavia Turbo 4x4 I'd probably head that direction (and I might just do that in the next month or so!) and chip it. The 4wd system in them is just the best I've driven (and that includes a full rally spec Pulsar GTiR and a full rally spec Evo) Haldex 4x4 system quote:"Normally FWD but Haldex directs torque to the rear when slip occurs to a maximum torque split of 50/50. Is also the system of use in the latest Volvo AWD models (S60, V70, XC70). "
