Got my G40/GT axle with stabilizer from under a pile of rubbish in my garage and decided to give it a bit of paint rust and dirt: the grinder sure knew what to do with it grind it into the air for me to breathe, uch uch cover it up with a bit of the good old zincspray I think I'll give it a coat of Unterbodenschutz(bitumen stuff) afterwards, just have to do a test on a bit of cardboard to see if it dries up ok and doesn't stay sticky...

Interested to see how or if it improves the handling of the Derby at all The way the back end feels 'light' sometimes as it shimmys over bumps etc, makes me feel that having a anti-roll bar would make it worse I to, want my car to sound like yours

not too many differences between the old and new one, except for the anti roll bar... I noticed some rust near the axle brackets, when taking off the old axle, off course i poked a bit.. OUCH!! off course the petrol filler is to blame since the other side seems to be fine... the whole corner came off, this will require some skillz to get back together.. and a new welder I guess... oh wait I was fitting the new axle.. mmh too wide.. after all not a very productive day, I just discovered a lot of work to do and didn't get anything done.. dan, I'm not only fitting an anti roll bar, also a bigger one in the front.. if I only did the rear one it would liftoff oversteer everywhere...

Took off the front wings and made some pictures: A pillar right hand side, doesn't look too bad mainly surface rust where the a pillar meets the paraffan, has been welded before Right inner wing, also patched before, but a lot of surface rust Front panel right side, left looks the same, I think they used the wrong sealant when they filled the gap between the front and the wing. Has to be acid free but I guess it wasn't and it ate the paintwork. The wings have been changed just before I bought it, by a garage (found the bill in the glove box) Left A pillar, had a spot of rust in the middle which needs to be welded. The inner wing is spotless. Rusty steering column, started from under the paraffan (which also has been changed recently. The window sill looks tidy enough. Floor in the front left corner, very bad, but I think i have a repair panel for this Floor and inner sill at the right side, has to be welded up properly next is removing the fuel tank and see what grot is around there.. sills and wheel arches are bad on the rear..

Good to see you giving the Derby the attention it deserves... not so good to see exactly how much..... that grot to the rear of the R/H side cill.... Ouch These Mk1s always seem to throw up horrible surprises when you start poking around ... moral of the story - if you want a retro VW saloon - buy a Mk2 Good luck Berendd Edit; see you are running the same springs as me... Apex, seem pretty good IMO

first I have to find a decent welder and colect some funds for that cause..
but some spots, like the front panel, just need some work with the wire brush so that's on top of my to do list.

Did some work this weekend on the derby, got the bitumen curse word and carpet glue out, with some .. carpet glue remover, that worked the part! looks a lot better sills are completely rotten on the inside... jacking points are rotten out completely.. I remember having a jack under that grot to replace a wheel a few years ago.. Can I just weld these round holes shut? It's going to have a full rollcage... Sill on the right side (euro drivers side) And the outside of the same sill, has been welded before, I fear some rot coming out from behind that.. and the inside of the roof, how to get that shiny again... I will run it without any carpets so it'll have to be painted... wire brush and fertan treatment?

The holes are there to drain the floor...if you weld them shut, the water will get trapped in there. :/

It needs a lot of work still and I'm having 0 time atm.. redoing my house too, so budget is 0..
and it didn't help that is was 35degrees celsius in the lockup for the last few weeks..
I've been playing with the idea in my head to do something else engine wise... have the suzuki on bike carbs and build a extreme economy version of the derby.. just for fun.
I was thinking of a 900cc twin cylinder turbo setup like the new fiat 500 is, haven't got a clue how to get it round but I like the idea of tweaking it so it runs 1 litre on 40kms... must be possible I guess..
