Jonny, Excellent kit! ;D - Read this from top to toe again. Where did you order the halogen kit from? Good luck with the 2K job. Are you intending to use a booth anywhere or what? Wondered on regs for selling you the stuff, using it etc.... Don't want to start a debate - just not in UK so was interested. Cheers John

Yo John. This was the headlight kit: cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=300165342071About 2K. First up I'm no expert but this is what I know. There was all sort of talk of it being phased out at the end of last year and nobody would be able to buy it anywhere but despite that you can still get it everywhere. There seem to be no regs on buying, anyone can walk in and buy it and you can spray it anywhere you like, except businesses have to use a booth that conforms to a certain level of filtration but the individual isn't limited. So the way 2K works is it's the uncured hardener that is the harmful bit, so overspray and airborne mist of the uncured mixed paint is harmful if you breathe it in or get it all over you, in your eyes etc. Hence when you spray you wear full covering overalls and eye protection, wear gloves when you mix the paint and so on. I don't know to what extent how harmful it is but you get hardly any overspray or airborne mist compared to celly so you're unlikely to get a faceful and I know plenty of people who have sprayed it in the early days with no protection and no harm has come of them. I'll be using common sense and my where my garage is not many people come past so I don't have to worry about anybody wandering in while I'm spraying. It's a bit smelly like any painting but I don't do a lot of it so with a bit of luck no-one will complain about the solvent smell.

2K is nowhere near as "worrying" to spray as I was told.
My neighbour didn't even notice the smell and I did it in an open garage which backs onto his drive.

Lets get one thing straight here, 2k is feckin dangerous and can cause VERY serious health issues or even death. Never underestimate how dangerous it is.
It can be sprayed at home with respect given for its dangers.
Use a good 3M organic respirator, rubber gloves, full coveralls, hat and EYE PROTECTION.
Isocyanate's are absorbed into the body by;
1, direct inhalation (breathing) 2, through soft tissue & mucous membranes (eyes) 3, through the skin.
Exposure to Isocyanate's can either cause an instant reaction (dizziness, faintness, passing out, brain damage or death) or a more insidious reaction which is far more common, which is a lower tolerance to the vapours causing emphysema type breathing problems (which is incurable) and also asthma type problems (also incurable). This is a slow build up not noticeable until it is too late, it could take 2 paint sessions where you are not careful, or 20 where you are, ONLY a full face air fed mask will guarantee complete safety.
Skin irritations are also another incurable side effect (eczema, dermatitis etc).
Ideally you should use an air fed mask, powered by a compressor that is away from the spraying area, (compressor will absorb vapours and feed them to your lungs), full clothing coverage and gloves.
When you have finished painting you should leave the spray area, remove all your clothing, wash it immediately (or use disposable paper suits) and shower.
Small areas can be painted by using the 3M masks, but you should either spray outside or have very good ventilation in the garage (extractor units), but the clothing rules still apply.
Do NOT stand where the overspray blows back on you.
Do NOT spray where overspray blows back in your face without a full face visor/air fed mask. (Wheel arches/inside boots etc)
Do not go back to spray area to work for several hours until paint fumes (smell) have disappeared, they are as toxic as the direct spraying.
I hope this helps everyone, you can use it at home, but treat it with respect, ignore the safety warnings at your peril.
Footnote.
Anyone using an ETCH PRIMER, EYE PROTECTION MUST BE WORN AT ALL TIMES!!!!

No probs, I know Mark well and what he said is 100% good advice. Once you understand what it's about and take suitable precautions you can use it safely. What we don't want to happen is have someone dive in and spray it in a t-shirt and a dust mask and get ill ;D I've sprayed it a few times and I'm happy with the precautions that I have taken, my advice came from Mark originally after all

Yep, was not lecturing (hope it did not seem that way) but its deadly stuff if not used right, take decent sensible precautions and its not too bad. As Jon says, we don't want anyone underestimating the stuff and getting ill, but used with caution and we can all enjoy our paintjobs for years to come. GTVSavior, hopefully if you have suffered no ill effects to date, then you are probably fine, but its wasn't good working practice!

This is how I sprayed 2K: With the garage door open and a big fan behind me I hope I don't die. That would suck!

Lopez, you got the correct idea, goggles over glasses would have been better as well, but its difficult to see where you are spraying with them on, doh.

I got the mask on eBay for a tenner delivered which is a damn sight cheaper than £25 in my local place. It's a 3M 4277 organic respirator and make sure it's new, sealed in the bag and in date.

Some unexpected (unwanted) news from the landlady means I've got to move out in 2 months. That also means I lose the garage so I've got 2 months to get the Anglia roadworthy so I can move it. Don't know if I'll be able to get another place locally with a garage so better be on the safe side and have it ready. I left it almost ready to paint just over a year ago and it hasn't moved since then. First job is to get some paint on it, then I can re-assemble. The tyres were all flat and it had become a bit of a junk store with parts for my Pop dumped all over it and a bike propped on the front. I haven't kept the garage tidy at all and this was what I was up against: Junk everywhere and no space to move in what is actually quite a big garage! I dumped the shopping trolley out on the road "as seen in my engine build thread" and one of my busybody neighbours kindly walked it back round to the supermarket. Stuck a few things in the Pop and it was ready to drag out so I could clean the garage: Bit by bit I managed to pile all the junk at the end out the way to make some space: Getting there... Much better. After hoovering the roof, walls and floor I could get on with some work and priority was getting a makeshift bench together. Two Workmates and a length of discarded worktop prove perfect for my masking and paint mixing table: No makeshift bench would be complete without ghetto makeshift toolmaking. I bought a roll of brown paper to mask up with and figured it would be easier if it had a dispenser. I had a length of pipe the right diameter and exactly the right length to hang it between a pair of axle stands: Now some lines marked on the bench at various lengths and a sharp 60cm steel rule to tear the paper and I'm ready to go. I already did the engine bay so that needs to be covered up which I tackled first: Behold how dark it is. Side windows were next but it was too dark so I'll do it in the morning followed by the doors and back window, then I'll be able to lay some primer on it. Got nice dry weather predicted tomorrow and searing 13 degree C heat so should be ideal for a bit of priming

Good work clearing the garge. Just found a place to spray the uno when i'm sorted for the cost of some paint so its all good.
Oh I forgot to say I talked a guy who knows all there is to know about the fiat engines. I've now bought a 16v head. He reckons I should be aiming for 100bhp atf with a 1 litre 16v lol.
