Overall mate, this is definately looking like one of the better fastys out there. My Bro used to have a pink one on Pug 205 1.9 GTi rims, seems to always be in the back to 89 displays at shows now. Was a horrilble colour, but they are great cars.
That was a bit OT, but i had the opposite to you when building my 1776cc, the pressure relief spring was so strong it pushed the camplug clean out!! I'm by no means an expert, but maybe you just need a stronger one of these??
Hope you get it sorted though.

Cheers Magnumpi, the oil pressure thing will take a bit of investigating as I tried every combination of spring and plunger so I'm now thinking I must have missed something inside the case. Next step is strip it down and make sure I have all the bearings fitted correctly and we will see what if anything was damaged while trying to get pressure. Dave.

I got a bit of time to spend on it yesterday to try and figure out what the problem is with the engine. I stripped it down and noticed 3 possibilities. 1, one of the cam bearings had moved slightly (allthough this may have happened as I split the case). 2, from inside I can see that the anular groove on the pressure switch is showing. No Idea if this is normal yet so will investigate. And 3, the biggest possibility for causing the low oil pressure. The outlet and inles on the oil pump don't seem to line up with the outlet and inlet on the crank case; I didnt know this could be a problem until I started looking into pressure problems but its not looking good for this case being usable. At least the crank and cam seem to have sustained no damage so will be re-usable.

Not many updates recently as I have been using and enjoying my car in the little bit of summer we have left. Things are still happening however. I completed a how to thread on re-covering the seats; www.vwscotclub.co.uk/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=6003I have just returned from Cumbernauld with my second set of shiny new bumpers; The guys were really knowlageable and took a lot of time getting them right so highly recomended. I have also sorted out a refund with Karmann Konnection so should be able to start collecting parts for attempt 2 on the engine. Dave.

Its a REALLY long time since I added to this thread. I now have a brand new case to start building the new engine but as its so cold in the garage I've not started it yet. I have also taken the decision to put the car off the road for the winter. It was always my daily driver and it would happily still be but the thought of a gritter going past of somebody else skidding into it after all the work made me hide it away and buy myself a £500 Vento to use for just now. This is where it will sit untill the salt starts to wash off the roads; Dave.

Dave, I've just seen this thread for the first time and read it from beginning to end. ;D Top resto job, it's nice to see a dub done properly. Re your oil pressure problem. I suspect that there's actually nothing wrong with your engine. You mentioned in one of your earlier posts that you've been running the engine on 10w/40 synthetic oil. Air cooled engines absolutely hate the stuff. The primary cooling system on an aircooled engine relies on the oil and fully synthetic can't dissipate the heat properly. It looses it's ability to lubricate properly and you will see a gradual drop in oil pressure as the engine heats up. I had exactly the same problem with a 2276cc I had in my old Hustler buggy that I'd filled with synthetic. I flushed it through a few times, filled it with a good mineral oil and the pressure came back up to where it should be. Morris 20w/50 should be perfect for your engine. You have built a beautiful car, congrats! Ian

Magnetteman, cheers for the tip but I tried a couple different oils in the engine and made no difference. The main problemI was having was the oil pressure dropping long before there was any heat in it so must have been something else.
I will get round to building the new engine at some point, the fact the old one runs so well kinda makes me wonder why I'm bothering.

you said that the bin man bashed into it then the council gave you compensation but were they just thinking of a couple of rattle cans and a tin of filler. £30 tops. bit more money spent on that. looks good used to be a blue estate version in my village. the young man got into trouble for the rude message he chalked onto the mat black tail gate. apparently he was.... Young dum and full of something or another :/

Cheers guys, I find it really hard to keep track of these threads as you don't get an email notification when somebody replies so sorry for not replying sooner. Alec, the council paid out the cost of a new wing and the labour costs for an aproved repair shop to do the work. As the manager of the shop was a really good friend he let me use the shop after hours to do all the labour myself so the compo paid for his paint work and patience with me getting in the way. Very shortly I am going to get started on the next engine re-build. I got a brand new case through instead of a cash re-fund on the bumpers so just need to get some heat in my garage and some time to get started. Here is a slightly more up to date shot of the car that somebody had taken at Volksfling last year; Dave

Been a while so time to add an update. Finally after 2 1/2 years searching I now have a full set of NOS type 3 over riders The first set I bought cost a lot and came from America but when they got here were not type 3 over riders. The second set cost not as much and came from Germany but again, were not type 3 but late Beetle so just about fitted and thats what are on the car just now. The newest set have come all the way from Canada and are Type 3, NOS and in great condition Got them from a very helpfull chap at Germansupply.com in Toronto. Wish I could go and fit them but will need to wait 'till my wrist is fixed after I broke it 2 weeks ago. Dave. P.S. If anybody wants to buy a very good set of late beetle over riders get in touch.

Loaded my fasty onto my transporter the other day to take it back to Mick the painter; On the way down to the Moffat car show last year I ran over a stone or something on the motorway and it was thrown up into the underside of the wing causing a dent and the paint to crack. So to get it fixed before the rust develops under the paint I decided to get it fixed before show season. Dave.

Nice sunny day so I decided to try something. I bought a set of Type 3 side stripes long before the car got painted but never got round to sticking them on before paint and was too scared to do it after paint. Today I got brave. The car went from looking like this; To this; Not fully convinced yet but I think they are growing on me. Dave.

Cheers guys. I have to admit that something about the stripes was annoying me so I went and got some extra stripe cut to put between the rear arch and the text; I think it has made a big difference and the stripes look right now. I also need to get the new engine built as I store the car at my parents and as you can see they just monoblocked their drive and I'm a dead man if I get oil on it. Still, while its sunny here is another picture; Dave.
