I´ve been looking around for a couple of years, but now I´ve got my own Retro Ride. It´s a very cheap 1989 Volkswagen 1500 I bought last week. I can´t drive it yet, because of the insurance. I couldn´t even wash it yet. These are the pictures I´ve taken the day I met it, a month before I bought it. This weekend I´ll do a deep clean and more detailed pictures. Compared to an Avenger, there´s not much differences, besides the production years. It has 1500cc engine from the first Avengers (we never got the 1600 engine), 61CV DIN (I don´t know the bhp conversion) and Hummer gearbox. I have a webpage dedicated to the cars Chrysler built in Argentina in the 60s, 70s and 80s ( www.argentochrysler.com.ar) if you are curious. I think you´ll find interesting the advertisings ("Publicidades") from the 70s and 80s. I´m afraid the data it´s all spanish, but just ask whatever you want through this post. FJSigma

WOW!!! Now you are talking. I fookin love it when we get a new international member with a blue-chip obscure old heap. Are there plenty of those knocking around in Argentina? I wonder how much it would cost to ship one to the UK.

I wonder how much it would cost to ship one to the UK. Why not fly over there, (Don't mention 1982 ), buy one, drive it north to the East coast of the US of A then ship it to Blighty!

Excellent!
What an excellent piece of badge-engineering...almost as good as the (Japanese) Nissan Volkswagen Santana!
Welcome to the board.
I'm off to hunt on Mercadolivre now! ;D

Thank you all for the welcome. lordyoung1980 : In 1980, in Argentina and Brasil, Chrysler sold the plant to Volkswagen instead of Peugeot, so it became a Volkswagen instead of a Talbot. The curious thing is that those years were the best selling years for the Dodge 1500 in Argentina and Volkswagen decided to keep it in production til 1991. In Brasil it ended producition in 1981 or 1982. pogweasel : Not exactly. There were some minor differences to adapt it to our taste and technology. For example, the compression ratio is lower. Oh, and the steering wheel... is on the wrong side, je je je. We also got the 1800cc engine with 76CV DIN, and since 1974 we replaced the Stromberg carburation for a more conventional vertical Holley. There are a lot of those small differences. briandamaged : Thank you for the link. Great page, but with some important errors. Since I have a similar page with similar information and I live in Argentina, I wrote the guy to correct the data and even to send him some scans from an original catalog. But no changes were made. xbo11ox : There are a lot of these cars around here. The problem is that most of them are used and abused (like mine) and most can't be saved. Anyway, you have to remember that our production numbers are really small compared to Europe. I don't know about shipping, but for about u$s6000 you can buy a really god car with the 1.8 engine. Thrasher : Sure, take a look in www.autofoco.com.ar, some nice Taunus with pictures. rmad : In www.MercadoLibre.com.ar the prices are a little distorted. Better in AutoFoco. Daveyboy : Plans are to make it driveable. I need to change the four wheel roller bearings (does it say so?), to check the brakes, to change the front end (all the bushings must be burned) and the gearbox selector (I don't know the english term for that) is broken. To fix the gearbox it must be taken off the car, so I supose I'll change the clutch also. As a matter of fact, the mechanic must do all that, because I don't have neither the place or the time. After that, I'll need to fix some stuff from the body. One trunk hinge is broken and the doors are disaligned also. Theres some rust on the back. After that I'll begin to play a little. One of the first non urgent things I'll do is to change all the front and back to 78-82 specs. I don't like those VW add ons. After that, we'll se what money allow me to do. Wheels and suspension comes next, I think. bortaf : Taunus coupes were more expensive and because of that not so much seen as the 4 doors. If you want to see nice pictures (specially from the newer coupes you never got in Europe) take a look here on the Taunus Club : www.clubtaunus.com.ar (this one for example www.clubtaunus.com.ar/Auto_mes/Auto_Mes-Abr2007.htm)FJSigma
