Ok back at it and decided to do a compression test on the engine . No1 145 psi No2 140 psi No3 25 psi No4 115 psi So safe to say head gasket and some other problem, engine is coming out today hopefully and I'm going to decide the next step. Different engine or stick with an original slant engine, not sure what to do now. Red top or Saab engine keeps calling me but both will be costly to do and I'm on a time limit at the moment. Whilst it's out I'm going to tidy the engine bay up and possibly give it a bit of a paint job. Pics to follow

Engine out without too much grief and ready for whatever I decide to put back in there.

Good luck with whatever you decide. If you engine is toast, and if you get rid of it, ive been looking for a set of 2300 slant car pistons (flat top) for my cf van which has low compressions pistons. I hope you repair yours and refit, but if not and you sell bits of it, let me know

If you do bin it, the pistons at least would go to good use

I'm in chesterfield so quite a way. Pistons could be posted? Or if it all needs to go in one hit I might be able to sort something out.

Not sure what you have planned engine wise but would the cam in head late CF/Manta engine be a easy swap or even perhaps a 1.8/2.0L OHC out of a Cavalier ?
It sounds like parts for the 2.3 are getting difficult to get although I expect the later OHC Cavalier engines are getting a bit more rare now.

Yeah rebuild would be good but been offered two engines but the guy keeps on letting me down so I'm just tidying up the engine bay and cleaning bits off. The redtop conversion keeps going through my mind but the engines are expensive and people want the earth for them. Trying to build on a tight budget is not good and I'm getting impatient now as I'd like to get it sorted and back on the road again for the summer.

Ok stripped out the rest of the engine to get the bits off I need for another engine and yet again the orange gasket sealer has been used to the extreme. Sump was stuck on with it and so I as the oil filter housing. The bolts for the oil pick up pipe were missing and I found them in the sump whilst cleaning that out. Engine is so bodged I'm surprised it even ran before. Sorted the steering coupling out as that was perished and split in half so that's been done using a stronger bush. Painted the chassis rails in hammerite black and tidied things up. Just want to sort the engine asap as I'm getting impatient now with waiting.

I know your after another engine, one that runs, but I would hold off selling those pistons (I see you have put them on the facebook groups ). A hc car spec engine is rare. A cf engine isnt. You could get a good CF engine and put your pistons in it. Might be easier than trying to find a car spec motor.
