Ever going to sell it? I WANT it!! Sorry - but this one will be with me for quite some time I reckon - I've had it 9 years and hope to keep it for at least that long again! Thanks for the kind comments everyone. It's coming off the road for a bit while I stick a 'breathed on' M52 engine in it....can't quite stretch to an S50 what with all the other metal I'm spending my pocket money on! ;D

It's coming off the road for a bit while I stick a 'breathed on' M52 engine in it....can't quite stretch to an S50 what with all the other metal I'm spending my pocket money on! ;D Here are some shots of the new powerplant. The donor vehicle - a crash damaged 1998 328i Mtech (cosmetic damage only). Bought for £1,000 and it runs like a dream! The powerplant with a genuine 34,000 miles (modified by BMW to prevent the Nikasil probs a lot of these suffered with!) Engine out - my mate Damo did most of this work at his place in Gloucester. He's keping the alloys, M3 kit and Avo suspension for a project of his own and the rest of the car I've sold on in bits (leather interior, doors, lights, mirrors etc...) which made me £1,200. This means I'm £200 in profit with a free engine/loom etc... and Damo has all the parts for his E36 project! SWEETNESS! Now I need to get my Zed up to his in Gloucester for the transplant..... More details will follow when I get around to digging the car out of my garage.

I absolutely love the Z1......does yours have the camouflage interior?
There was a couple round here a few years back and one was owned by New Orders very own bernard Sumner!
That is one car that is certainly on my 'must own' list!!!!

I absolutely love the Z1......does yours have the camouflage interior? Sure does: It's difficult to keep the nubuck looking clean - but unless you keep it as a show car (which I don't) then you just have to accept these things.... There was a couple round here a few years back and one was owned by New Orders very own bernard Sumner! Bernie Sumner is quite a hero of mine! Wow - to think he owns/owned a Z1! Tooo cool Someone I know on the Z1 forum (totalling 30 members - gives you some idea of how rare they are! ;D) has just bought the Zed that Eddie Irvine used to own when he lived out in Monaco. It's been neglected, but I know he'll have it up together before too long.

Thanks for that - I have the same model (Minichamps 1:18) but with the original wheels, not the chrome ones like he's added - have stuck it in my watch list anyway and will see what it goes for. He'll have another for sale sometime in the near future I am sure....

really cool car! love the doors, especially the fact you can drive it with the doors "open"! what engines do these have as standard? I'd never even heard of the Z1 before this thread!

Standard engine is the M20 2.5 lump (the only engine they used apart from the 66 Aplina versions which had their own 2.7 M20)
170bhp the same as in the E30 325i's but the car weighs nearly 100kg more than a 325i!!
Having said that, I was at an E30 meeting down in Devon - 23 E30's in total and me in the Z1. ALL the E30's were tuned 325i's or 2.7's etc.....and mine was stock. On a bit of a blast through the countryside they caned the daylights out of their cars yet mine overtook most of them and I only stopped overtaking when I got to the lead car (because I didn't know where we were heading)
I'd left the meeting point with 2 E30's behind me (21 in front) and got to the destination with 22 E30's behind me! There were a LOT of surprised people at that meet.....especially one 2.7 owner who was overtaking three cars and as he pulled in couldn't beleive that I just carried on past him even though he was giving it his all!
The car seemed to gain a lot of respect when they realised it wasn't just a flashy high street cruiser....

Just been sent this image by a guy who's producing a book all about the Z1. He approached me because he wanted some images and a write up with my views on the car. I was happy to oblige. Suffice to say I'll be getting a copy when it goes to print (this is the sample book, lots more to be added yet....) I'm just chuffed to see my motor in print.....

Well chosen photo location too. Sets it all off so nicely, better than many a mags photo quality. Now every time I drive past I'm going to look and think something is missing!

Love the Z1. They really are a very good looking car. I worked at the launch of the new 3 series at a local garage in the early 90's and they had one of these in the showroom. Drool-worthy!! Nubuck leather is the sex!!

In one of those crazy moments like you get sometimes.....I sold the Z1 last week!!
I guess it was time to move on. I'd owned it for nine amazing years - all nine of them very memorable....but despite it being my dream car, I just wasn't using it like I used to. I guess it had become just too precious and I was getting more & more pedantic about taking it out etc...
I advertised it on P/heads and it sold within 4hrs! The buyer was from Holland and he flew over a few days later to pick the car up. Didn't even lift the bonnet, just took one look at it then handed over the cash.....a big BIG bag full of £10 & £20 notes (he came with me to the back while I paid it in to prove nothing dodgy)
Oh well - the end of an era.....but boy was it a good one!
What next I wonder?? Well the answer to that will come very shortly....
