Bit curse word about the brakes, hope you get them sorted out quickly! Any improvement over the standard setup has got to be good! You're not kidding.....Changed the rear end stuff yesterday, got some mk2 8v gti calipers/discs/pads for the front... My driveway yesterday..... Isn't this the darkest brake fluid ever bled out of a system !??!?

Hmm, uninteresting update....with a pic.....of a mk1 golf looking exactly like it did 8 months ago or so... Seem to have sorted the igntion woes, but have an electronic ignition solution in the garage...we shall see......

Couple of ( awful ) pics. First is my " new " electronic igntion. A quick scout about the internet revealed that a distributor off an earlyish saab 99 non turbo is the same as the existing distributor with the added bonus of a hall effect sender ! I can then use the ignition module and loom from any 80's VW really, in this case I'm using one off an '89 polo. Need to swap over the rev counter feed from the cars loom, but pretty much good to go - apart from the vac. advance unit has had it on the " new " dist.....bah, so now got to pull that apart ( needs a little puller to get the spinning disc thing off inside ! - any suggestions ? ) Here is my collection of scrap/junkyard parts - igntion module top left. and in situ on my other small block mk1.....just to prove a point that it fits and engages etc... Hopefully should have the dizzy back together this week, might test it on the other car to see whats what. Also, started stripping down my spare rear beam, as I'm convinced the one on the car has had a wack at some point...ugh..... Pulled everything off, Going to change the bushes obviously - considering these - anyone used them !!?? cgi.ebay.co.uk/MK1-GOLF-GTI-SCIROCCO-REAR-BEAM-AXLE-POLY-SPORT-BUSHES_W0QQitemZ390054546378QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item5ad1100bca&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12|66%3A2|39%3A1|72%3A1683|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50Can anyone see why they shouldn't work with the split in the middle !? one more pic - just to prove it does move, went over to the allotment to see if there was anything still standing after the rain ! more updates soon, I can feel the mojo returning slowly .

Important update !! It passed its MOT today, one advisory, one " slightly " corroded rear brake pipe - which doesn't matter, as I'm going to change it out when I do the rear beam ! Hurrah. Now it has a years ticket of course I can relax and start (re)thinking about bolt in budget power increases, my intial thought is the 1.6 small block 8v lump - 100bhp with the standard fuel injection I think ? The thought of the wiring scared me though, is it as bad as I might think ? Given that I'm colour blind !! lol Anyway, just found this pic of a non-identical twin.....I have a single light grille in the garage as well ! ;D

Nice one with the MoT, but why not try the engine that /\ car has? 1.4 16v from a later Polo I think. EDIT: The build thread for that car is here if you are interested.

Looking good! I'd suggest a 1.4 16v (100bhp) too, my wife has that engine in her Lupo and it goes very well even though the Lupo weighs a lot more than a Mk1 Golf. Not sure on the wiring but I know it's been fitted in a few older Golf's and Polo's before so there will be information out there I'm sure. Failing that, the old faithful 1.8 or 2.0 16v makes for a very rapid Mk1 Golf

I obviously thought of the mk3 2.0 16v lump, with the K jet injection, but I want to keep it small block really, cheaper tax !! Clearly a G40 would be ideal, but far too beyond my price range !

After some metal on metal action on the front brake er.. " front " , I decided to fit the gti brakes that I had lined up for the gold mk1 ( although now I've got it all worked out I'll build up another set for that car ) Its really simple - Early mk2 gti calipers Carriers from a mk2 polo ( I got mine from an '89 " Fox " ) mk1 gti vented front discs some pagid/jurid pads I also needed some new carrier bolts, as the ones that came from the scrapyard were too short, I popped over to GPC car parts ( who are now near Hitchin NOT Luton as their website states ! ) We poured over ETKA for five mins and decided that a set of bolts for a mk2 would be fine - and guess what !? THEY ARE !! Vents !!!! Much better. This is in " mock up " stage at the mo, need to get some of the spring tensioner things that keep the pads level, other than a quick bleed job ( and fitting the same to the other side obviously ! ) its good to go / stop.

I'll be interested in hearing how much of an improvement this makes to your brakes, hope it works! A very good friend of mine has already done this on his small block mk1 ( the original 1.1 set up didn't really cut it with a twin 40'd 1300 ). He reports about a 15% increase in stoppage/feel etc. In my case though it'll work out more than that as mine were knackered anyway..

I still need to finish rebuilding the dizzy, just haven't had ANY spare time in the last few months ( years ! ) Of course it'll work, its a pretty simple principle.

I'm now on the lookout for that brake setup, especially after seeing it still has 13s.

I'm now on the lookout for that brake setup, especially after seeing it still has 13s. Yeah, plenty of clearence as well. Still not happy with the pedal travel, although they do work ( and stop ! ) Will do some miles this week to bed it all in, then bleed them again ! Not much else to report today, just come in from the garage, have given my other fan housing a quick coat of " smoothrite " - as I had a tin knocking about...smooth my knarled backside.. Anyhow..

Another moderately underwelming update . FINALLY got a new rad - Maybe I was looking in the wrong places ( like local car spares shops, VW, etc.....er.. ) and here it is, note the candle of peace behind, can finally stop filling up with G12+ and water every 4 days - was getting pricey.... :-D

After filling up with £35 worth of unleaded this morning a smell I hadn't encountered for a while returned while charging to work - the smell of fresh fuel. A quick look underneath revealled a nice pool of fuel ( within 20 seconds of arriving ) and the bottom of the tank covered as well. So, I figured I'd have a look at it, took a half day off work and went home, pulled the back seat out and the inspection plate to be greeted by everything looking normal. THEN - i waggled the fuel lines to check for tightness - and a large lump of plastic fell out.. Now, as this car has always whiffed of fuel a bit I reckon this has been broken since I got it, and when I fill it to the brim ( rare ) its enough to slosh about and pee out everywhere. Thankfully I had a spare tank and sender in the garage ( got given it for nout years ago ! ) So an hour faffing about had the sender swapped over, changed a couple of lines in the engine bay as well as they were looking pretty poor as well. Result - sorted, no more whiffs of fuel, no more leaks, and it seems to pull a little bit better as well. Time will tell if fuel comsumption is improved. Sorry for lack of pics, was in a hurry to get it all done as I need it for work tomorrow.

Quick update - fuel consumption has not improved a great deal !! That might have something to do with my lead foot. AND, the gearbox had started to howl a little bit more - ungrateful I think as I changed its oil 3 weeks ago.. Anyone got a decent polo 5 speed box ??!!!?!?

Right ! a few weeks ago I came across a mk1 gti in a local breakers, not much left but walked away with this lot.... Also got the rear beam/anti roll bar and injection fuel tank. Result. Fast forward a couple of weeks, and my back really is starting to suffer with the knackered drivers seat ( was knackered when I got it, and approx 15K later its not better ! ) So, yesterday I took the seats over to the in-laws who have a vax and gave them a good clean.... before.... after.... water... Ugh, etc.. Although not perfect, some localised repairs to the drivers bolster and some attention to the release mechanism ( cables not snapped happily ) and I should have some much more comfortable things to sit on...

These really are lovely MK1's mate, and two rare colours - cant believe Ive missed this thread. What is that brake set up like? is it difficult to change the two setups over? Stupidly easy to do mate, just unbolt the old calipers, fit the gti carriers, bolt on the calipers, gti flexis, bleed and done. Much better stoppery now - although the original brakes were fragged anway ( must be all the sub 80mph stops ) .....
