Update ahoy from a 38 degree evening on the golf.... Started messing about a few weeks ago changing the worn out brake pads.... Woops, new ones Id brought about a year before, noticed however that the drivers side piston seal had split entirely and the piston itself was in very bad shape.. So - Also changed the master cylinder.... Managed to poke a small hole in the back of the passenger sill, so that will have to be whizzed up quickly , but I reckon MOT next week....just in time for my " Stag do " at Bug Jam...hahaha.... Not bad for a high mileage old bat really -

Woops !
Well I didn't get the brakes sorted in time for my stag do.
For some reason the pedal doesn't seem to want to return when depressed, have changed out the master cylinder and greased up all the links in the brake cross bar linkage ( originally designed as LHD only you see )
Time is of the essence though, as I'm loosing my parking spot in two weeks, then it MIGHT be up for sale with a years MOT. :-(
No idea what these things are worth these days - whatever it IS worth it wont make up for the hole it'll leave in my soul.

Right....after a tough week with all things regarding life, the universe and all things in my life mk1 shaped.....we now have an MOT !!! Got a local Touring car team to do the work ( I kid you not ) - as I had to move house. Here it is skulking at work shortly after being physically assaulted by all and sundry. Conclusions ? Well the gearbox is still howling and the engine itself is getting rather tired as well. Still plan to put the HK lump in with the 5 speed polo box - as soon as I can borrow my ever generous fathers garage......

Quick update ! I still have this ! :-D
After all the hassle of MOTing it last year, moving house, loosing my parking space and THEN my licence on medical grounds ( positional vertigo )
This has been filed away at my folks new house in the country, where everyone that has come to visit or deliver has commented or offered to buy it.
Should have my licence back in a few weeks, so I can get the mk4 back on daily duties, then I think I'm going to go to town on the mk1.
Life is far too short. :-D

Here it is filed away at my folks house - handily their new house has a nice double garage, I'm tempted to ask if I can do my engine swap ( which has been on the cards since about 2010 ) there, my Dad says he isn't into cars anymore but he's done nothing but fiddle around with this since it landed at his ( its the cleanest its been since about 2001 I reckon ).....very lucky to have such good people in my life.

Ran the mk1 up yesterday, stuck a load of G12+ in it ( as its starting to get COLD in the UK ), I'm probably going to change the lump for my spare HK code solid lifter 8v I have in storage ( rev city ), but theres simply no need to neglect things.

Today I went out and pulled the nearly buggered gearbox out of the mk1 - good riddance you dreadful piece of howling nonsense..... Was to be replaced by a five speed polo box, but having looked at the state of the engine I might have to try something else while Ive got the tools out..... :-D

I've really enjoyed this thread. So many guys now with flash garages etc. Which is great. But there's many of us not so fortunate and it's driveways and the side of road for us.
Also , needing the car for getting to work, as this car was used, is a really good incentive to getting a job done and requires well throughout approaches and preparation. I've been there.
So many great upgrades done , it's fantastic.
Well done. Keep it up.

Just read from start to finish, thoroughly enjoyable read. I'm nose deep in a mk2 resto but always wanted a mk1. Glad you've never sold it. Had to do a double take at the date when this thread started. Will keep an eye on how she evolves!

Thank chaps. I've had to be methodical/experimental/inventive as I've always been brassic/unwilling to pay someone to do something I can probably do myself if I can be bothered. Re - the mk1 at the moment, the only reason there has been this flurry of activity in the last few days is that I've moved to Yorkshire and the car is at my folks house " DARN SARF ". While ther is no hurry to get it moved I'd rather it was sooner rather than later. Problem is now, having been underneath it for a few days I've noticed how leaky and filthy the original engine is, its probably done at least 180k ( i genuinely don't know ) and as its only held in now by one engine mount, an exhaust, an accelerator cable, a fuel line and 2/3 wires, it seems very silly to leave it there. I have another solid lifter engine ( HK code ) which are a much better bet, but its at my new house in Yorkshire......ho ho ho. So I might enter into careful negotiations with my folks later on this after noon ( over a lobster thermidore or something ) as to wether there can be a few weeks delay while I gather my other engine together, check it over and bring it down and stick it in. The other option is to source a 1.4 16v Polo and appropriate 5 speed box and stick that all in with the original engine management less the cat. Should be good for about 120 bhp no ? They seem to be very reasonably priced at the moment. The agony of choices ( that and having the freedom to do this kind of thing at all ! )
