Just my sort of car. Cheap, fun and unusual.
Want to build a cool Mini, escort or Beetle? Then you've got a bit of work ahead to make it stand out. Alternatively, start with something people aren't doing already and do the usual tricks and you get something cool.
If we're taking sides here, I'm with Slater. Havin' fun with cars - what else is there?

ok ok I'm sorry about being passionate about building old cars. il just go back to being quiet and getting on with it.. There is passion and there is arrogance, and you sir often mistake one for the other. Don't get me wrong though, I love the fact you are out there building cars instead of just talking about building cars, hell I'm sure all of us would love and embrace the opportunities you have to do these things. I believe you have a truly great car in you somewhere and because you're constantly building something you are working to the day you realise that potential.

Well i found them a bit 'patronising' TBH Meh, like i really give a curse word anyhow. I don't care whats said really, ill do whatever i want

If I wasn't restricted by the grown up stuff that litters my life then I'd have built that Rover. Not the Pug (I haven't got the guts), or the Metro (I'd not have bothered legitimising it with a proper engine), or the Mini (too much competition!).
I spent most of my youth chopping springs and changing rims on unloved cars and I'll never build a hot rod because a. I don't want to and b. I can't. I am Slater, but with less mechanical skill.

Hmmmm, I read Slater's first post and laughed to myself. ;D It's a retro car, looks nice and tidy, and definitely an unloved model to boot. And with a quick slam and set of rims it looks great. It's not expensive or difficult, and obviously the number of miles it's done lately proves that choosing a decent retro car could negate the need for a newer daily driver for many of us. If you can afford to have a car - any car - you can afford to roll in a motor like this. Doesn't matter whether you regard it as built, modified, altered, customised or whatever, the fact is it's cool and accessible, and three or four evenings in the garage rather than on the PC = cool car on the drive. That's how I took it, anyway. I would have to say that I've never thought Slater considers himself "better than the rest of us".... When it comes to nailing together cool cars, he is fundamentally better than most of us, me included. The amount of admiration - bordering on worship - he's gained for his cars on this forum are a testament to that fact. But let's be honest, getting one's ar$e in gear is the biggest part of it all, which is why the off-sounding comment struck a chord with me. ;D {Edit: There have been like 10 more posts since I started typing this one so sorry for any cross-over... Typing's hard with the torn muscles I've got from trying to build a cool car! ;D}

difference is, rmad, is that you know when to shut up, or abstain from saying things that don't need saying.
Slaters posts sometimes seem a bit more 'BNP' to your 'Liberal' if you follow me

Not here joining in this...probably out building another car anyone could build...but no-one did. Again. In my opinion if Adam left RR it would be a greater loss to us than it would be to him.

Get up, stop looking at this damn forum, build differant cars, use them, kill them and think its the norm.. But then Slater - how would we read your posts? Seriously I have a great deal of respect for your ability and flair - I'd just prefer it if you let your work do the talking as you really need to wind your neck in sometimes.

Thick skinned IMO Peoples attitudes make or break cars for me. Still love the Rover, cos its what I would like to do, and it look pretty good. wondering what everyone's doing when they are not at work or doing something less boring instead? retrorides.proboards86.com/index.cgi?board=readersrides

Though I don't see whats so 'different' about changing wheels and lowering a car. Pretty much standard affair. Strange tone to that sentence. Ho-hum. You must remember that Slater believes he is some how fundamentally better than most of the people on here for some unknown reason... that attitude occasionally comes across in his posts. Cars alright though. As usual. But not being able to get reasonably priced 4x100 wheels is because you ain't trying hard enough, some of the most "scene" people I know refuse to spend over £100 on a set of wheels,.. yet some how always seem to have the coolest rims. 4 x 100 in 13inch are a bloody nightmare to find! Since ive got the car ive been looking for some and ive only come across 2 sets thats have been under the £300 mark! Nice car slater, really subtle but them wheels and the lowering really adds to the road presence. Also if them wheels are 13's and are for sale ill have em off ya ;D

Not here joining in this...probably out building another car anyone could build...but no-one did. Again. In my opinion if Adam left RR it would be a greater loss to us than it would be to him. Maybe...but then id be out working on mine if I had a) the money and b) somewhere not on the street to do it. I too enjoy Mr Slaters builds and (most of) his posts. He's a pretty well educated and knowledgeable fellow. BUT, as HW pointed out, theres a fine line between confidence and arrogance.... and the latter I have no time for. I know I'm wibblepoo at cars but I don't go around reminding people of the fact. The same applies in reverse. I can count on one hand how many people I know currently doing modified a FWD, rusty, 70's japanese underpowered, ugly datsun 100A here in the UK, but I would never claim to be 'doing something different'...I'm just enjoying messing about and getting greasy ;D

Get up, stop looking at this damn forum, build differant cars, use them, kill them and think its the norm.. Look here, also here, and here. You could also try this one, or this one. All of which involve more than chopping some coils and fitting some rims. I deleted my last sentence I typed because I'm sure you're not the arrogant w@nker your post suggests you are.

The cars good should of been a bronze one though. Unfortunately like most I don't have the disposable income, space or time to build what comes into my head. I'm quite happy plodding along searching for bargain parts and tweaking as and when.
