Ive finally bought myself what I thought would be the ultimate Retro Family car. I finally found a Mk1 Renault Espace 7 seater. Got it home 2 days ago, took it out today with the family and now realised it only has lap belts in the rear seats. Ok apart from the fact one of my kids is still in the reverse facing baby seat and the other has a booster chair for normal seatbelts Does anyone know of any conversion kit I can put in to make the seats safer?

seats out of a later espace?
i imagine anything would require some welding to get the mounts sorted though
full cage with buckets harnesses for each member of the family? :-)
BTW - i got the V5 through in the end, 8 weeks after you sent it in, and just after the DVLA told me there was no record of it and that the car was "still registered to its former owner" - sorry i chased you regarding it!

Excellent! Must have pics...
Tim's advice seems sensible (well, apart form the buckets! ;D ) but I don't know the Espace well enough to know whether there are upper mountings fitted anywhere in the body.

What about the middle belt from a Scenic, or a 2001 on Clio that hangs down from the roof? Having said this does the Espace have a plaggy roof, if so is there a brace bar to bolt the belt reel to?

How many kids? Would it be worth hunting around for some captains seats from a kia or similar that have the 3 points built in?

Try not to hit anything? Depending on the year, you don't need rear seat belts. I survived rolling about a school Mk1 transit minibus in the 80s.

Ask the local Renault dealer for advice then hit the breakers yards. I'm sure our old Espace Mk1 had proper belts in the back of it. Not worth the risk of simple lap belts with kiddies in it.

Has anyone considered fitting those Espace front lips with the foglights onto any other type of car? Look quite cool!

The bronze/brown one in Slaters p-shop ftw The rear pillars don't look like they have much room for seat belt mounts.

Nice one Boycie. I can see myself having one in about 20 years There are reverse facing car seats that work with just a lap belt but that would obviously only solve half the problem and for a short time... Seats with built in belts sound the best way to go really. I know Quickfit deal with this kind of thing. Maybe you can find a suitably equipped transit or similar minibus to relieve of its interior? Edit: Fred, its a legal requirement that children are restrained in a car but yes, you wouldn't necessarily need belts for an adult.

not sure if the booster seat will work with lap belts (it feels like thats something which would make them less safe) but some front and some rear facing kiddie seats will work with lap belt only. Check with the manufacturer of the seat. I only have lap belts in the back of the Cadillac and the front of the Olds so we made sure the seat we got to use with them was lap-belt-only compatible.
Another option would be to weld in an iso-mount out of a scrap car and use a modern iso-fit type seat for the youngest.
I'd go with seeing if the belts from a later model can be retrofitted. Asking a dealer may not be the best answer though as legally they canonly advise you on what conforms to type approval for your vehicle, not what will physically retrofit into it... Renner owners club may be a source of info, or just do a little stripping out and see what mount options are in there.
Back in the day, before rear seat belts in cars were factory or even dealer fit, my parents had like kiddie versions of Sparco harnesses - made by Britax. Either get some race harnesses and adjust to fit, or see if you can find any oldschool Britax kiddue harnesses. Would you believe I threw a set away only a couple of years ago I'd pulled out of one of my cars...
Fred - just 'cos it worked in the past doesn't mean its a good idea now... I can think of a lot of stuff which was done back in the day, we survived it, but with the benefit of hindsight is not something you'd do now...

Bit confused as to what you are driving at here.... how many small people and how many seats? Original post implies two children, which surely shouldn't pose any issues at all. Assuming that you are on some kind of 'cheaper by the dozen' deal and have five kids (mentalist!), then it's a different kettle of fish. If you comb back through the archives I did a similar request a few weeks ago, when I was provided with the details of a firm who would convert lap-belted seats to 3-point inertia reels, courtesy of forum member "lawnmowerman". I haven't the link to the firm to hand, as i only saved it on my laptop, not my work poota, but it's out there, somewhere (CBA to hunt for it ) In the end it came to nil anyway as Er Indoors insisted upon a frugging Picasso

I think its 2 adults and 2 kids, but the rear seats are all lap belts and his booster seat and child seat are both designed for 3 point belts.

Are they really all lap-belts?
Some rellies of mine had one when they very first came on the scene, about 1985, and kept it until about '93. I thought that they had 3-pointers everywhere but the middle centre. Maybe my mind is fading.

It might open a can of worms to retro fit. If they are not to the MOT tester's liking, it's a fail. No seat belts on a car of that age are a pass. Bear that in mind.

Are they really all lap-belts? This is what I had understood the problem to be. I might have misunderstood? He was here this afternoon picking up the Mazda and seemed to be the gist of the conversation we had then too.
