So I got myself a hire car for the day yesterday to go and see a village (Anstruther). On the way there though I didn't see the bus lane marking in the city centre and er, um, may have driven through the bus only area. Any cameras around there in Edinburgh that will be sending me a nasty bill in the mail when I get home?
Also what do the cameras look like in the small villages? Those Gatso things? I only saw one on the A90 coming back to Edinburgh but I did see two cops standing in a bus shelter in Weymiss, though that may have been to get out of the rain.

Fine? yeah, fine. Dunno but a few places in the UK they use cameras mounted in the busses to snap offenders. I don't think there are any fixed cameras for it. Also many bus lanes are only bus-only in peak times and you can drive in them the rest of the time. Speed cameras generally are yellow boxes on poles. Their presence is anounced a few hundred meters ahead by a sign which looks like a vintage Kodak Brownie or something.

Princes Street is permanently off-limits to cars these days, but I don't think they've stuck any scameras up yet. Also, there's not a single fixed gatso on the A90/M90 from about four miles north of Scumdee all the way to Edinburgh, but there is the odd Talivan on the bridges.

I live up here, I'm pretty sure there's no bus lane cameras on Princess St. With all the current road works (tram line construction) it's very doubtful that there's any operational. I think you should be fine

If it was London i'd say you were deffo in for a fine but no idea about there mate, i loaned me truck out last year and got 3 fines in one day (or the driver did), one illeagal right turn (10 mins after the road became no right turn at rush hour) 1 driving into a bus only road and one bus lane infringment, all from fixed bleeding cameras, cost the driver £240 Dick bloody turpin is alive and well and running the London mayoral office

In our very fine city of Nottingham no less? How do I know? Because my idiot of an ex-wife thought she was driving a bus instead of the car that was still registered to me Bottom of Hucknall Road where it meets Mansfield Road just short of the Forest, the picture is taken from high-up SPECS-style so not the back of a bus. They're just bog standard CCTV with a decent enough resolution to get a clear snap of the plate and driver, and they're monitored by actual humans who just push the button when they see an infraction. No automated recognition systems telling busses from cars in use.

I think everyone who's been to Edinburgh has done this.
More importantly, did you get fish and chips in Anstruther? They are the best ever.

Fingers crossed you'll get away with it, but have no idea about that area. For people who say No they don't have fixed Buslane Cameras, they most certainly do in London, they look like this, sorry for small pic, only one i could find. While looking i found this, its about 5mins from my house, honest officer , i know nothing For various dirty tactics used by the Talivans, see here: www.speedcam.co.uk/van.htm

For people who say No they don't have fixed Buslane Cameras, they most certainly do in London, they look like this, sorry for small pic, only one I could find. That looks more like a red light camera to me, but maybe they're used for bus lanes too. Anyway, in London you can also get fined via the Traffic Control Centre CCTV cameras - they're primarily used for things like working out where there's congestion or accidents so they can change the traffic light timings and minimise jams, but they're also used for enforcing bus lanes, banned turns, illegal parking etc (particularly illegal parking, and particularly if you're obviously holding traffic up). They'll just get a sequence of still shots showing what you've done wrong and they get put with the fine in the post. You're never guaranteed to be safe...

Ageed, it does look very similar to traffic light cameras, but they have them on bus lanes, where no lights exist, they normaly have a raised arc type bit of metal on the top of them.
Agreed number 2, yes they mainly use CCTV style cameras to catch you. My dad stopped on the way home from work to pay the Congestion Charge, we were rewarded with a parking fine for stopping on a yellow line, and they sent us a VHS tape. It showed all of the road by panning round etc and zooming in with pinpoint accuracy on road signs and names to highlight the offence. Also in a comedy style speeded up way showed my dad getting out the van, crossing the road to the shop then getting back in and driving off lol. It's quite scary the amount of detail, and the quality of the image.

Anyway, in London you can also get fined via the Traffic Control Centre CCTV cameras - banned turns, Yeah, we suffered that for not opeying a turn left only sign near Holborn. Except we did it a few nights on the trot (at like 11pm - no traffic about) and only found out when the first fine came a week later Any policeman seeing our manouvre might have given us a ticking off on the first occasion and we wouldn't have done it again. We sent a letter explaining the extenuating circumstances we were under at the time and were let off.

there are definitely no fixed gatso type bus lane cameras on princes st - however the whole city is covered by CCTV and the pics are damn good (i had a good play with them only just last week!), as yet though, they aren't being used for bus lane infringements. I'm sure it's not far away - they'll probably start once the tram system is operational (that'll be in 35 yrs time once they've dug up every road in edinburgh!!!) There are quite a few speed and red light cameras in the city as well - filed somewhere at work is a plan showing locations of them all.

Well I went from Edinburgh to Anstruther (Cellardyke) via the Fife tourist route, then on the way back outside Kilcady (I think?) I got on the A90 and then just took the bridge motorway back. WTF is with English cities being difficult to navigate around, only morocco was worse.
I reckon I got a few fines, I didn't see any Gatsos even though there were the camera signs posted in a few villages but I can't be sure, was too busy trying not to get lost. Guess I'll see in a few days, thanks for all the info guys.
I saw the tram line plans.... what a project. My home city has them, they're great, but I think Edinburgh is well, a bit small for trams??

I'm surprised that wasn't on the news.
