hey all, here are a few bad shots of my 323, i've had it for a few years now and it's just transport, however I am now planning on doing a few minor mods. plan is to lower it, and I have some 7" hotwire wheels to go on her (i know some people don't like them much....tough). a mx5 turbo transplant would be nice, finances permitting. anfurtunatelly she takes a back seat at the moment to my 71 alfa 105 project that I am up to my ears in. but hey we'll get there. current stats: wheels/tyres: 5" performance turbos 175/70 r13 engine: bog standard 1300 (5 speed box though) everything else: standard I have resprayed most of it but they rest is deperate for some new paint. I love the hotwires, they will look awesome on that car. In any case, they're a great '70s Aussie wheel.

All the FA4 323's are suddenly coming out of the woodwork!
Cracking little car there Bruce, look forward to seeing how the update go.
I am just starting an MX5 conversion in mine and will start a readers-rides thread on it soon...

yeah, I am still very undecided.
anything less than a 205/60 is not legal apparently, but I do love the idea of a bit of stretch.
It would also help with any clearance issues.
the other thing is price. 205's are a far bit more exy, and i is broke!
so time will tell.

anything less than a 205/60 is not legal apparently, but I do love the idea of a bit of stretch. Not legal? I would have thought that a 185/60 on a 7" rim would be absolutely fine. Unless there are different laws in Oz? Very nice car by the way, the hotwires are awesome too!

As far as the laws go in Australia regarding the fitment of wheels and tyres, it depends on which state you're in. Since you live in Queensland, the law is that you can't fit a tyre which is more than 1.3 times the width of the widest optional tyre fitted by the original manufacturer. Also, your track cannot increase by more than 26mm, which means a maximum increase of 13mm offset each side. Legally, this may give you a few problems. In order for the 7" wheels to be legal, Mazda need to have offered at least a 5.5" wide wheel as standard or optional on the 323. You should have no problems with the offset of those nice deep-dish hotwires though! well, all i can say is that them rules are really really gay. whats compulsary third party?
|

yeah that blows, but i guess its only illegal if you get caught.
i still recon i am going to try the 185 tyre, spoke to a bloke a while back who said he may be able to do it for me.
I'll let you know how I go

jaykay, Compulsory Third Party is a mandatory insurance which is included in the cost of registering a vehicle in Australia and which covers the cost of bodily injury or death to any person who you may happen to accidentally crash into or run over. I'm sure there is probably something similar in the UK. Whilst I am slightly biased because I don't like tyre stretch and don't understand why anyone would want their car to look like they couldn't afford the right sized tyres, I would think that it would probably be illegal also to stretch a tyre beyond what the manufacturer recommends. A 185 tyre on a 7" rim is admittedly a very mild stretch though and a normal tyre shop may even put them on for you. Just make sure you don't crash as your insurance may not pay up and you could get into a lot of trouble. EDIT: Just to be clear, I don't actually know whether the 1977 Mazda 323 was available with an optional 5.5" wide wheel or not, do you actually know what the widest wheel they offered was? If it was 5.5" then you're in the clear to go for the 7" wheels, if not you might need to get an engineer's report to make them legal.

doubt if they ever came out with anything that wide, but your guess is as good as mine.

ok so here is another project that is in our garage, this one is currently taking priority over anything else as we are running out of time to its first event. Its my dads 1971 bmw 2002....well actually it was once a 1600 acording to the plate. the body was bought as is with all the cage and fiberglass fenders in place. It also has a glass bonnet and boot, all windows are plexi apart from the front screen. we have an e30 m3 2.3ltr engine to be transplanted into it, but the steering is yet to be changed and the wiring still needs to be sorted. the donk a nice new airmchair I sprayed the engine bay today
