1.8 OHC GM units are non interferance. As those fitted to mantas. My belt slipped once and wouldnt run. Took me age find out why it wouldnt run. Just retimed it and away she went! Not sure about the more modern 1.8 and 2.0 8v vauxhall engines but id hazzard a guess they're the same. I snapped a belt on a carlton 1.8 Li in a car park miles from home - bought a new belt locally and fitted it - drove home

Why not just keep on top of belt/chain/tensioner changes?

Why not just keep on top of belt/chain/tensioner changes? If only it was that simple......

It's not always the belt that breaks. Quite often it's a tensioner, idler or water pump that fails resulting with the same damage. We hardly ever fit just a belt these days, nearly always belt kits.

The 2.0 Pinto, afaik is non-interference, unless you fit a spicy set of cams, for example.

what else were these fitted to? volkswagen LT vans The diesel engines clobber the valves hard enough to snap the cam tho 2.0 pinto is safe, 1.6 and 1.8 interfere (although not as badly as some, they often still run after a belt "incident") Essex and cologne v6 are also safe, and have the same sort of fibre gears as the volvo engines mentioned. Most cars will run after a belt incident (take the Twin Cam Peugeot XU engines like the XU10J4, XU9 etc.) But there will come a time when the valves drop, causing more damage than just the valves and guides then. Some drop them suddenly after, other go on for ages.) But God don't the top ends get half rattly then! FWIW some of the Volvo B230 engines are non interfaced as fitted to the 740 and 240 but the engine codes need more investigation then. I know that the injected flavours are definitely interfering designs.

My old mans 85 passat (1.8 8v) was fine when the belt snapped, just popped a new belt on and she flew again!
