I guess that you already knew that there is four different grilles for the 114/115 benzes? The narrow grille does exist with two different metal meshes (114 had one type and 115 another). Pre 72. Also there is a narrow grille with plastic mesh. 72-73. Finally, there is the 74-76 wide grille, and that's the only one that will fit your car.

Mines the wide grille and yup I knew that ta Just thought I'd grab SS's as it'd be handy to keep - this wont be my last Merc youngtimer - I just ordered my speakers - went for SPL Dynamic SD 5.2 components in the end I think my amp is a bit overkill now

Next to the bonnet-lock you should find a little badge indicating the chassis-number and the Mercedes option-codes (all in 3-digits). The second line should give you the original paint-number (3-digits plus "G" or "H" for the original paint supplyer). By the looks of it I'd guess your car is 131 Pastellweiss or 050 Weiss.
Nice resto btw! I know a lot of people who would kill for a red interior like yours. ;D

Thanks for the reply rr69h!
If I give this paint code to a paint shop, they should be able to match it?

It's just dawned on me that the car will do more miles in 2 weeks than it has done in 10 years. Approx 1000 miles. Should be fun.

Bring the fuel flap to the paint supplier as well, they might be able to match it from their paint sample swatches

Your paintshop shouldn't have any problem mixing the right stuff if it hasn't been resprayed in a different color. You can even buy the paint from your local Mercedes dealership if you're made out of money you feel like it. As to relieability: Only an empty petroltank can stop a /8. I've just taken mine out of hibernation after a mere 10 months and popped down to work in it. 40 miles without missing a beat!

Fuel flap is a good idea. Unfortunately this will all have to be done over the phone as I have very little time! I've come to terms with the fact that the finish will be poor on the paint, I'll get it into the paintshop later in the year, when I'm done with the 116. rr69h - what does the /8 refer to? Mine seems to be different as it's a 230.4

*History teacher mode on* Well... "/8" = stroke eight or Strichacht in German was the unofficial name for the W114/W115-series. It debuted in 1968 and went on sale with engines that (mostly) had the same displacements as the fintail-models it replaced. E.g.: both cars could be bought with a 2 litre petrol 4 and wore a "200"-badge. Legend has it that to avoid confusion with German authorities the new models were labeled as "200 /8" on the registration documents to make sure it's not one of the old type. And this somehow stuck with the public. Ask anyone around here what a 230.4 is and only the anoracs (such as myself ) will know what you're on about. "Strichacht" on the other hand enlightens far more people since it was a common name for the car. *History teacher mode off* Phew, that was exhausting. Just in case I haven't bored you to death and you're still reading this: you can find a list of what color went on those things right here: meinbenz.de/farben/114/farbcodes114.htmAnd it really doesn't matter what you call this car. All that counts is that it's just a fine old Benz. ;D

*puts hand up*
Isn't the 230.4 so called to distinguish it from the 230.6 (.4= four-pot, .6= six pot) Also I read that the reason the /8 suffix was chosen was because it was launched in 1968. Apparently this system was going to be used for all future Mercedes model launches but it never happened.
Looks like you're making great progress Mark! It's looking superb. I'm looking forward to seeing this at the Gathering!

Ta dude - the colour is 050 Weiss! Nice and simple. So, today was some good progress. Managed to get most of the filler and stuff sanded down. Now it's not perfect, and I could have done a much much better job, but it's a 10 footer which is good enough for me. I don't have the patience for painting, never have, never will! Primer went on nice and evenly with no drips. Did 4 layers of primer, so a bit of wet flatting tomorrow and it's ready for paint! Got the front end all polished back - it's the first time I've seen the car not covered in bird curse word and dust, so the paint is surprisingly good! There are a few dents and scratches but I can live with all of that Pics tomorrow.

OK, so irritating day. Managed to have the busiest day on record in work, meaning that even with only doing half the stuff I had I still didn't make it to the paint shop.
So my cousin is going to bring the stuff up in the morning and get me sorted.
I got a little bit more prep done. I didn't want to sand down the primer, as I put it on quite thick, so I want to give it another day or so to harden nicely.
I also polished & fitted the grille - looks fantastic even though it's a little bent! No more piccy updates until Friday morning I'm afraid, as I left the cable in work, and I'm off travelling around the country now!

Just went to collect the wheels from the tyre fitters. They only had 1 wheel done, and when I looked it, they've damaged the surface of the dish.
To say I'm gutted is an understatement. It's screwed.

Bastards. Go into where ever it was in front of a pile of customer and make sure they hear you giving off to the boss and demanding your money back and money for the wheel. He'll want to give other customers piece of mind.
