Got a problem with my 2001 ex-AA T4 - it's a 2.5 TDI.
It won't select 5th or Reverse. I had hoped it was the linkages but after a bit of a look today it doesn't seem to be The problem seems to be inside the gearbox with the selecter I think
Anyone else had this problem?
Has anyone got a link to a picture of an exploded view of the gearbox (a Haynes Manual type line drawing would be good) showing how it should all look if I get to the 'take it apart' stage.
Many thanks.

Common problem on the 2.4/2.5 T4 boxes, mine has a full rebuild in 2007 becuase of a similar problem, now I've lost synchro on second. I don't think its a very strong box.

Hi i had a similar problem with mine could not get 1st or 5th and it turned out to be the clutch master cylinder. Not to bad of a job to change its above the clutch pedal inside. Cylinder cost about £75 i think.

Reverse is left and up, VAG gearbox Reverse right and down, non-VAG gearbox ok, now I'm confused - what other box was put in the ex-AA vans then?

Reverse is left and up, VAG gearbox Reverse right and down, non-VAG gearbox ok, now I'm confused - what other box was put in the ex-AA vans then? Some had VW boxes (reverse left and up), others had Fiat boxes (reverse right and down). The easiest way the check is have a look at the gearbox from underneath (as well as the reverse gear obviously!). The VW box has a removable end plate with a VW stamp on... ...whilst the Fiat box does not have any end plate... If you are not already a member/user, the VW T4/T5 forum is a wealth of information.
